Sabot Slugs

I had a weird try at it once but it didn't work. I made a silicone rubber mold of a sabot from a Winchester shell I cut apart and cast copies in polyurethane resin. I chose the Winchester because it used a .50 bullet instead of a weird one like .625" so I could just buy common .50 muzzle loader bullets and try it. They grouped like buckshot though. Likely the totally wrong plastic to make them from but I figured it was worth a shot since I had the material spare.

I'm not sure if wads are covered under ITAR and export restricted from the US but I know ordering from Ballistic Products (a big shotshell reloading online store in the US) in the past has been difficult because of ITAR. That's all set to change with the lifting of most ITAR export restrictions from the US in 2019 though.

Lyman makes a slug mould that is meant to be used in a standard shotgun wad. I find them very accurate and would push them past 100 m. A lot cheaper than buying slugs from a store. You reload them the same as shot loads. Lyman #5 has reload recipes for slugs. These slugs are meant for rifled barrels.

Is that the one that is shaped like a giant air gun pellet?

I have used that one in a smoothbore and it shot well. Probably even better with some rifling.

Thanks for the replies. Upon googling "Lyman 525 sabot" the reviews look amazing. I think I will be investing in a pot and the mould eventually. The sabots had really good reviews and may be exactly what I'm looking for!

Yes it does look like a big air gun pellet. I took one over to the store to show the coffee crew and I over heard a young fellow saying his dad let him shoot a pellet gun. Had to show it to him. Told him when he grows up he could fire big ones. Dad look at the size of that pellet. Never told him or his father it was'nt an air gun pellet.

I recently picked up the 525 Lyman sabot slug mold. Will wait for some better weather and start testing them out. I keep reading great feedback once you get the wad column right.
