well, invest in this $15.00 part from Brownells

http:// www.brownells.com/shooting-accessor...gs/ar-15-m16-safe-port-prod21481.aspx?ttver=1

it's a dust cover/chamber flag but, comes with the fancy feature of basically a spring loaded kickstand that makes it eject as soon as you pull the charging handle. Don't believe the one star review, fits mine just fine.

Keeps the dust out in storage and, I suppose when I'm doing all my high end operator crawling through the dirt drills by which I mean shooting at my clean, ventilated range

That being said I like it, it's a good addition since the AR runs fairly wet which attracts all kinds of crap in storage. So, I thought I'd share what works for me :) YMMV!

The sport doesn't come with one. Saves money and really not that necessary anyway. I'm not running around a desert. No forward assist either! Oh the humanity!

ok, slightl off topic, and sorry for the embarrasingly newbie question, but what does the forward assist do? Is it the spring that slams the charging handle forward when you pull it back and let go?

It allows you to push the bolt carrier forward, that is if it does not go all the way forward on its own... Basically useless if you have a good running gun, and considering you are probably at a range, you should…

Note: after extensive testing I have scientifically proven that leaving the dust cover open or closing it makes little to no difference when locking my AR in the safe or its case… meh…

My AR180B has a big gaping hole in the side of the receiver. It's never once had an issue and trust me, I beat the crap out of my rifles. Falling in mud holes, crossing rivers, dropping it off a snowmobile, etc.

You'll be fine.

The forward assist is for a failure to feed. The idea is that if the bolt doesn't close all the way, you can tap the forward assist to ratchet the bolt closed. The bolt has a bunch of teeth/grooves on the side of it that the forward assist pushes against to help it close.

Everytime that I've had a failure to feed, hitting the forward assist does nothing but leave a dent in the palm of my hand. To clean any jam in a 3 gun match, I always strip the mag, rack the bolt, insert a new mag, rack the bolt again to load the next round and continue. But that's just me. I'm sure many others do it different

I love my old school Colt AR15 (fixed carry handle). I do intend on buying one of these S&W Sport riffles one day. It's thin, light, and I personally have no use for the forward assist or dust cover where I shoot. My 2 cents.:)

When a failure to feed occurs the round typically does not go into the chamber all the way, the forward assist will not solve this. Strip, Rack, Load is correct. The forward assist is for when the round does chamber but the bolt does not go fully into battery. Which is fairly rare in these times…

Is that a dust cover or a apparatus that shows safe?

A dust cover should not be something you have to pick up when you charge the rifle. If the rifle goes from the safe to the range and back it doesn't really need a dust cover.

Sorry to derail the derail!

You're right I really bought it to show safe but, it claims other uses :)

It's partly advertised to leos to show safe when cruiser ready when locked in its cruiser rack. Then the popping off feature is supposed to assist investigators in determining when/where the officer charged the weapon as a result of a shooting. Again beyond my needs but I like a gadget as much as the next person!

See my latest post...I really have it to show safe but Brownells figures it's multi use

Oh no malls where I live...I guess I'm stuck with being a gas station ninja and it's really a bright orange chamber flag that automatically spits out, so not terribly ninja like.

Lotta dust at your range?

WTF does a civilian rifle need a dust cover for, other than the tacticool mall ninja factor.

I concur. My AR180B never had one either. I've since sold it but, presumably it still doesn't :)
