Hello,

Did a spontaneous purchase the other day for a ~400 lb safe. Is it safe... Structurally to have it in an upstairs room/closet or would that be too much floor load and better off locating it into a basement.

I weigh 300 lbs and I walk around our home on size 12 feet. How many size 12 feet does the safe have?

AI Overview

A normal residential floor is designed to handle a live load of about 40 pounds per square foot (psf)

Depends on your house age, construction etc.

I have a 55 gal fish tank that weighs over 500lbs when fillled, it is in the living room. It is spread against 2 joist and over 48inches and I do got noticable sag there. I have a jack post in the basement under.

If your worried , throw some 7/8 plywood underneath the safe.. distribute the wieght..
If your house is antique,, id be worried about those stairs giving way also.
It doesn’t distribute the weight that much, and it adds 2 psf of dead load.

The safe is 400 lbs + contents.
Put it in the basement.
