Finally broke down and got a rifle. Kind of :D

Picking it up on Friday and I'm wondering about the legalities of storage. I don't have a rifle-sized safe, nor do I have the space to get one any time soon. One of those green gun lockers would be like a red flag to thieves, and I have zero confidence in their protective ability.

As I understand the regs, the gun is ok anywhere in the house as long as it's locked or disabled. Now in most cases I'd just slap a trigger lock on it and call it good. But the Sub-2000's trigger guard is actually a moving latch, so that style of lock would be ineffective. I've got a dislike for cable locks, whether founded or not. Those familiar with this gun know that it folds in half and locks with a built in key lock, but I don't know that the police would call that adequate.

Any lawyers in the audience?

Trigger lock isn't the greatest with the trigger guard able to fold out.
I use a short cable lock wrapped around the barrel and forend in a way it can't be pulled off, or the factory lock (almost never) or in a case or backpack with a lock.

Don't get carried away. It just has to be legal.
If a thief wants it he's gonna get it. Not sure how a safe is a red flag for thieves unless you are under surveillance and they are just waiting for the chance rob you as soon as you buy something worth taking.

Don't be so paranoid. Buy a safe, this won't be your last firearm ;)

Oh I already have a pistol safe to be proud of ;)

But there's nowhere left in my apartment to hide a rifle locker; anybody looking in windows would see it. I'll probably end up with a Pelican case or something, but for now I just want to bring home my latest prize :) Thanks for the tips.

I have family in the US the had thieves chainsaw the wall and safe onto a flat bed and winch one of their safes out. Turns out to be the kid a cross the back lane from them.

Didn't they take video of themselves doing it and post it on youtube like the rest of the retarded kids these days? I'd love to watch that one. Then watch them get the crap beat out of them.

Just remember that a cheap safe or case is just as legal as an expensive one and with the money you save you could buy more ammo or in some cases another firearm.
I have 2 of the cheap stack-on safes and am just as legal as someone with a $2500 safe.
Just as Secondgunman pointed out, if they want it they will get it. Just be legal and record your serial numbers in case it happens.

I have a restricted sub2000, have to use cable lock for transport as obviously trigger lock wont do crap (well they do crap on a normal rifle too)

if you want to do the hide and lock approach instead of a safe, run a cable lock through the ejection port, down the grip / mag well then the bolt can't close and a mag can't be inserted so it is safe

The locking mechanism that secures the rifle in it's folded state is more than adequate for storage purposes. You could then stuff it in a laptop sleeve and hang it in the closet amongst your shirts it's so tiny. Mine fits neatly into the laptop section of one of my Eureka back packs.
