safety switch or not for hunting

You handle a firearm exactly the same whether it is loaded or not, so........?

Exactly, besides the way the standard SKS is designed there is no way one can have a loaded mag, and an empty chamber.

A good topic on hunting with SKS! I chamber a round whenever I get off my truck and head into bush, but with safety on. I know that I can't trust safety, any safety...so I never have a loaded gun beside me while road hunting, never. I'd rather let the game slip away than seeing something unpleasant happening.
This is good practice, because it's unlawful to "discharge, carry or have in possession a firearm containing live ammunition in its breech or in its magazine attached to the firearm, in or on a railway car, motor vehicle, sleigh, aircraft or bicycle." -BC Hunting Regs, P.18, Item 5. Unless you have a duckbill mag or an SKS-D, there's no way to legally have an SKS with a loaded mag in your vehicle with you.

You can carry an SKS with a couple rounds in battery & no round in the chamber for walking in the bush, but it requires fiddling. Load the ammo into the mag, then pull back the charging handle while pushing down on the round(s) in the mag with your thumb. Ease the bolt over the ammo and then let it snap shut on the empty chamber. You can then either keep the safety on to leave the hammer cocked, or pull the trigger and let the hammer fall, it's a matter of preference. Then when you see game, just rack the charging handle and you're good to go :D

I stand corrected...I forgot about the "fiddle method", or rather I blocked a painful experience my thumb had once while doing this. :D

Last week when we went deer hunting, the friend who came with me forgot to bring the key of his gun lock. So he had to sit right beside me doing nothing while road hunting, and he couldn't drive the truck for me cuz mine is a standard tranny, but he was holding my gun for me. Around 9am 70 yards away one buck and two does (or might be one spike?) jumped out of the bush on the road side. I had to stop the truck, stepped down the parking brake and make sure it was parked well, grabbed the gun, jumped out of the truck, loaded the ammo... by the time I was totally set up, the deer were gone in the thick s**t, not because I was slow. My friend asked me why not had the gun loaded while road hunting? I just gave him the same lecture I wrote above. But we got our buck and LEH doe on the same day still.

LOL I hear ya, that recoil spring is pretty strong  I wonder if the bolt carrier has enough mass to shear your fingertip right off? There's lots of sharp edges in an SKS, and heavy things flying around... Regardless, it would really suck to be bit on the finger by an SKS :p

Id say if you're walkin through the bush, waiting, calling or whatever why not have a round chambered with the safety on? like was said, u should always control muzzle direction regardless.
in a vechicle I would definately not rely on the safety on a chambered round, that is against the law as well. Might throw a few rounds in the mag cuz it is so easy to hit the release and be legal if need be :D

my bolt actions all have firing pin blocks so they definately have rounds chambered when out of a vechicle

<---- going to keep to myself what I think about road hunting .....cause thats a different thread in a different room.

Also you are in a different province.

Most of the "roads" us folks out here in BC are talking about saw a logging truck 45+ years ago, and many of us have to carry small chainsaws just in case we need to clear windfall across the path. :D

I prefer parking out of the way, and walking. :)

If this was a standard trigger lock then they are uhber easy to defeat in less then 2 seconds.

Funny thing was that I beated the same type of lock some time ago but wasn't able to do it again this time. Any tips for that?:)

If its the standard trigger lock then just grab a side in each hand and twist, the cheep metal breaks pretty easy. I know this as my shooting/hunting buddy always forgets his keys, lol.

Wasn't trying to offend anyone, I now realize road hunting there is not at all same as here.:)

Cheers!

Why are all the threads in the SKS forum so freakin' polite? Where's all the freaking out and swearing and insults and accusations? This thread is boring, I'm gonna go start a bear defence thread in the Hunting forum....

;)

SKS is a rough gun doesn't mean that we SKS fans are a bunch of rough people. You can start a bear defence with SKS thread right here!:D :D :D

IF I had my SKS with me on a hunt today I know I would have had a Deer. :D
Sorry to digress...I'm still kicking myself over this one.

When hunitng, the chamber always has a shell in it, safety on.

If I am covering really rough terrain- especially with a partner- the chamber gets emptied.
A

As soon as we are back onto better terrain, I chamber a round again.

I'd do th esame wiht a SKS
