I just recently receieved a SAFN-49 in .30-06 caliber I purchased from a fellow CGN member. I love this rifle, but also know very little about it's operation. I have done some research on this rifle, and have been assured by previous posts that using factory ammunition should work fine in this rifle's particular caliber, even the previous owner has informed me that he has used all types of factory ammo in this rifle without any problems. My first day out at the range I fired just over thirty rounds and was very pleased. Upon firing my last strip of ten rounds I had a mis-fire halfway through. Upon inspection of the unspent cartridge I noticed a mark in the primer, then following rounds also failed to detonate, and each consecutive round had a shallower mark in the primer until I came across rounds that appeared to be untouched. I tried loading and firing a few more rounds and eventually had one go off, but that was it. Looking at the firing pin it looks as if it is not sitting far enough forward. I will be taking this in to be inspected by a gunsmith, and so far I remain confused as what I should do with this problem. Any other members have a SAFN with similar issues?

If I recall correctly, there is supposedly an issue with the firing pins.
It's something to do with whether or not they are one or two piece.
Can't remember exactly, I'll try and find my SAFN book and check it out.

Some people have suggested that the Egyptian ones in 8x57mm are missing an important part. The issue is a two piece firing pin, I believe.

firing pin.

Two things

Strip the bolt and check the state of the firing pin, the single pins often break. Also while stripping the bolt check for bits of metal (brass) on the inside of the bolt.

If that is all good put the bolt back together and insure that the firing pin moves cleanly. ( I will post some pics if you like.) I have had the same problem on my Egyptian one, and it was a damaged firing pin. I ordered an 2 part pin form Numrich. No problems so far.
