SAFN 49 Question

Are all the SAFN 49's the same except Cals?

If you had a SAFN 49 in 8mm is it a big job to switch barrels from say 8mm to 7mm?

It was made in

30/06, 8x57, 7.62x51, 7x57 and 7.65x53

for

Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Colombia, Egypt, Indonesia, Luxembourg and Venezuela

I have rebarrelled an Egyptian to the same 8x57 using a barrel from Marstar. I am prepared to be corrected, but aside from the 30/06 which has a different mag, it would just be a barrel switch to move between chamberings. Fine adjustments for headspace are made by replacing a knock-out "wedge" with others of different sizes, but I imagine that they are non-existent, so you'd be stuck with using a finishing reamer for that.

The gas port may need to be drilled a different diameter depending on caliber, but I don't know for certain.

Safn 49

I have an excellent 7 X 57 FN 49 barrel that I am thinking of using if an Egytion 8 X 57 came along with a really bad barrel I might be able to restore it. I would assume the gas port is the correct size as the barrel came off an FN 49.
I like 7 X 57's and I have a number of Mausers in that caliber.

I will find one out there and have the caliber I want. I just have to wait.

"...assume the gas port is..." Not necessarily. Gas ports are different sizes according to the cartridge pressures.

Would be nice to get a safn to shoot .308 . Any barrels avaliable in .308 ?

I've rebarrelled my SAFN to 308 using a Remy 700 barrel - not many other options available...
