Guys,

I'd like to put one of my rifles on EE, was gonna keep her but plans changed. It's a Sako Riihimaki L46 action in .222 Rem. It's a 1954 year of production but sure does not look like it. The metal is mint. The wood has a few safe kisses. It wears a period correct Weaver K6 scope in Leupold bases and the glass is bright and clean. The action has not been broken in yet.

I don't know much about Sako's and have no idea what to ask for it as there are no other Sako 222's on EE to compare to. I would appreciate someone helping me to determine what I should be asking for it. Thank you!

That's a very desirable Sako. The L46 was really their first widely-produced rifle and is highly valued by Sako enthusiasts. I'd make one suggestion: remove the scope mounts and replace them with Sako mounts that clamp onto the integral dovetail on the receiver. The present mounts are redundant, as the Sako dovetail makes additional bases unnecessary, and, in addition, force the scope to be mounted too high. I'd advise against Sako Optilock mounts. Instead, I'd look for a set of the original Sako ringmounts. They come up for sale periodically and are far more appropriate--and period-correct--than the mounts currently on the rifle. If you replaced the mounts this way, the more knowledgeable Sako enthusiasts would, I believe, be interested in the rifle.

I've owned quite a few Sako rifles, still have four. Collectors will like yours, especially in that condition. I'd guess it is worth almost what a new Sako M85 is, or about $2000 or so. however, the right buyer has to come along. Those who don't know better think the .222 is "obsolete" and has been replaced with the .223 or other faster cartridges. It remains one of my favourite cartridges and is desirable to a few other shooters who appreciate it.

Epps just sold a ratty L46 .222 for a $999, doesn't seam like any of the Sako small actions are hard to sell, I say you will have it gone in a week, if listed for $1800,
I've got a L46 in .17 fireball, pd $1250 ten years ago, prefer the 461 action over the 46, mostly due to the magazine differences, Nice rifle, I wish you luck selling it, and well done keeping it in such lovely condition.

Appreciate the info! Very interesting. If I can easily find a set of older Sako rings I'll swap out the Leupold ones. If not I'll list it on the EE as is.

Nice example of a L46 222. Probably the nicest I've seen that is not a deluxe. I have had few L46 222 rifles pass through my hands. In good condition $1000 +- $100. Yours has an early type 3 stock with nice wood so it should bring a premium. What that is in todays market I am not sure. If you want to swap rings I have a few sets of the older style that are period correct for that rifle. The Weaver scope may be desirable to some as it is nice but to the collector of a Sako L46 it may not add value.
I'd pay $1400 for it no problem.

Good luck on your sale.

Chris
