Find the best way to get over the winter blahs is to go gun shopping. Half the fun is trying to narrow down the choices. Still considering .338 federal vs .30-06. I see some good prices on 75's but I'm partial to the new 85.
Question - what about the controlled feed in the 85 versus the 75. Any reason I should stay with the proven 75 and not get the new 85?

I personally see only one reason - price

the 85 is lighter, better magazine design, controlled feed (not that it really matters).

They are totally different guns, neither of the calibres you describe is appropriate for dangerous game, so CRF is irrelevant. I am having a hard time loving that ugly Tikka T3 stock on the 85, to me the only reason for the 85 is weight. I am a Sako lover, I currently own 3 and have owned a few more. The 85 isn't really a Sako, to me it feels like a Tikka, not that there's anything wrong with that.

BTW the previous magazine design was fantastic, I don't think I ever took one from a gun to load, Never had one come even close to falling out, the idea that it needed changing because they were falling open is goofy, my bet is a design change was neccetated by the newly redesigned ugly stock.

The 85's plastic stock is a flimsy cheesy POS... makes the T3 look good.

I wouldn't pay $1000 for a Sako 85... let alone the $1800 they ask for them!

As for cartridge choice... for short/med range the 338 Fed is a cool cartrdige, but honestly how can the 30-06 be topped (besides the 280AI (grin))?

Sako 85

I have had the .270 WSM in my hands and I like the feel of the stock, I can not bare to look at it. I am going to have a look at the Tikka and look at replacing the stock on it. It will still be better than $1700 and still having to replace the stock. I have the Sako 75 in the 7mm STW and really love it.

I compared the 85 to the 75 Finnlight and the 75 felt better in my hands.
The magazine is no better then the 75's perhaps a liitle over done, the stock feels like a cheap Tikka and looks terrible. To top it off its waaaay to expensive.

I went through this at Xmas, handled both, 75 finnlight won, no question. 85 felt cheap, and the switchable cheek rest bothered me. Buy a 75 while you still can!

BTW the 85 is only CRF for the last 1/2 " before closing the bolt, the cartridge is already in the chamber.

Sako 85

Well I recently bought the Model 85 in a 270 WSM. I did a lot of rifle research and narrowed the field when I went gun shopping. I handled a lot of different models and makes. I narrowed the field to either the Model 75 Finnlight or the Model 85 SS. I was a tough decision. I wasn't partial to the stock of the Finnlight and I did not like the key concept idea. I understand that you can get the kit to get rid of it but didn't know the price. Being Sako I imagined a lot.

If you are going to buy the Model 75 you better hurry up. I know that Canadian Tire in Calgary (on McLeod Trail) still had a 30-06 in the finnlight and the price was pretty good.

It all comes to personal preference. I did have a Tikka T3 SS last season only to sell it once I found out you can't get after market synthetic stock from the reputable names. It has to do the fact that the T3 has the recoil lug bedded in the stock to cut costs.

$125 for Stoeger to do it.

Anyone find any sythetic stocks that would fit the Sako 85's? I have 2 on the way and wouldn't mind changing out the stocks on them. I was thinking of a Rimrock stock.

What about the Wood?

I think we all agree that the synthetic stock, and everything else, on the Tikka T3 is a horrid abomination. Surely, when the history of firearms is written, the success of this model will mark a milestone: the time when firearms ceased to be the preserve of gentlemen, and became a mere play thing, hobbled together by economists and advertising executives, to amuse the most ignorant of the great unwashed.

It is contemptible trash that mirrors the decent of enlightened civil society into a vulgar mob.

Winchester is gone and we are left with Tikka.

Is this progress?

But here is my question regarding the Sako 85. What about the wood? Do wooden 85s have the same glorious stocks that made the company famous, or have these too been contaminated by the spirit of Tikka?

I have never seen a Sako 85, but I hope some of old craftsmanship remains and there are also some left who appreciate it.

I've looked at a couple of 85s and am not going to give up my two Model 75s. I don't like the stock design. It doesn't have the same feel when it comes to the shoulder.

I've also never had a problem with the magazine falling out of my 75. The detchable magazine that can also be top loaded was one of the reasons I bought the 75.
