I recently decided to switch for hunting with my benelli r1 3006 to hunting with a bolt action. Someone offered to trade may for benelli for a sako 85 black bear 3006. I know this is meant to be a bush gun but i was thinking of throwing a burris veracity on the thing and make it a medium range hunting rig. What do you guys think?

They are an outstanding rifle, except for the maddening tendency to bounce brass off the scope. There are ways to mitigate it, but ultimately it's an aggravation and potentially a liability. If would want a BB in a short action .308 or a Grizzly/Brown Bear etc in magnum length action, depending on which end of that .30-06 spectrum I wanted to be at.

In principle though, depending on conditions that's a good trade, the BB is a significantly more expensive rifle.

I have a BB 30-06. In fact it’s my go to hunting rifle. I’m running a 3-9x36 Swarovski and have no trouble shooting to 400yds (limit at my range), which is beyond where I’d feel comfortable taking an animal. Biggest thing I struggled with was rings & bases. While the optilock ringmounts I went with work well, a decent QR setup is certainly worth consideration. Also, it’s a Sako, so be prepared to pay more than normal for factory extras.

As for the R1+$800, that seems a bit steep if your R1 is in good shape. The BB does not hold value well in the secondary market for whatever reason. Fairly common to see them sitting in the EE at $1400 even with extras. I paid under $1300 shipped for mine. Was in very good condition but no extras.

If I could change one thing I’d go with the .308 instead. Think it’s better suited to the shorter barrel.

You need to google " sako 85 ejection problems " and confirm proper function before buying.

X2 ^^

Yeah I think it is a little steep too. Not crazy high because in it is brand new. But steep. However, a couple things change the math in my books. First, it is a business you can expect to pay a bit of premium for that. I would rather not see those small hobby size businesses go under. I am doing OK financially a lot of people aren't right now. So I figure if lose a couple hundred on this exchange I will probably make that back down the road. But these small guys keep the big guys in check. Plus if he is an honest seller it never hurts to have him owe me one. Financially probably not the best move. But I think there are other factors. Granted in general I agree the price is high.

You know that you can make a reasonable offer... the way to trade is to figure out what it is worth "to you," offer that and let the offer stand... leave your name and phone number and then walk away.

If you’re willing to pay the price the rifle is unlikely to disappoint.
