I want to buy a new rifle and I'm thinking I want a Sako 85 Hunter. I have been a loyal Browning customer for years and have been waiting, hoping for them to put out a nice traditional style bolt rifle for the past few years, but, again this year they have disappointingly built the new age "Spacey" looking Euro style stuff ...not that there is anything wrong with that, ( I have a Stainless Stalker X-Bolt that I like), but it would be nice to see some old traditional style aswell.

So,..I have been looking on the Sako web site, but after searching around the internet there are a few things that are a bit unclear to me about the 85 Hunter,.. and also I'm not sure if the Sako web site is up to date..so I have a few questions.....

1...is the bolt throw 60 degree or 70? it doesn't seem to say on their site...I've read it is 60, also I've read it is 70...from videos I've watched it looks like a short bolt lift.

2...what style of checkering does it have? ...traditional pointed ...or rounded chopped up style like Tikka T3 ...I have seen both styles on rifles listed as 85 Hunter.

3...is the stock straight flat comb with raised cheek piece ..or is it monte carlo raised cheek piece...I have seen both listed as 85 Hunter

Any info would be helpful ..thanks .....feel free to post pictures,....I always like to see pictures of rifles I am interested in.

Thanks guys...

This is the model 85 Hunter that I want...this pic is from the Sako web site...Monte Carlo raised cheek piece stock with traditional style checkering, ..I just want to make sure this is the style rifle I will be getting when I order....

Beautiful rifle! That would be the Deluxe and not the Hunter.

OK...you could be right....but that is the image it shows for the hunter....the difference I see between the image for the Hunter and the image for the Deluxe ...(plus the description of both)..is shiny bluing, rosewood fore end tip, rosewood pistol grip cap, and gold trigger on the "Deluxe",...where as the "Hunter" has a matte finish on the metal, no rosewood fore end and pistol grip caps, and no gold trigger.........so other than the fancier trimmings on the "Deluxe"...I think they are of the same style and configuration. ....but as I said,..this is what they are showing/describing on their site...and I just want to make sure it is correct before I order...$2500 is a lot of money for the wrong gun..lol

This is the image for the "Deluxe" model...notice rosewood tips, gold trigger...

This is the image for the "Hunter" model...notice "lack of" rosewood tips, gold trigger...

You have it right. For sure it would be better to handle these fine rifles first before buying.

I purchased a model 85 hunter 2 years ago now in 6.5x55 sweedish and couldn't be happier with it. Unfortunately i cannot answer any of your questions right now as i am not at home to verify. Not sure what caliber you are looking for but ellwood epps has a few hunter models in stock and anytime i email them for some pics they usually get them to me within a day, so you could try there.
