What the heck is going on with the prices on this rifle? A year ago they were under $2000 and now they are over $3200. None of the other Sako models had this ~65% increase in price. What happened? Have there been huge upgrades to this rifle in the last 6 months?

I am not suggesting this is the main reason for the price hike, but with the Canadian dollar tanking everything is more expensive now. A year ago we were close to par, now it cost me $1.41 to buy $1 USD last week. Or possibly maybe one of their CEOs needed a new summer home?

Maybe, but other models did not see such a price increase. I thought maybe they changed it or something

In 2015 their (msrp) for the 300 Win Mag version was $2070 CDN and for the 338 Lapua Mag it was (msrp) $3046 CDN.

This year (2016) it does look like the buck has some influence - although these come from Europe and we didn't get hammered quite as bad a US guns, there is still an increase.

So for 2016 the 338 Lapua Mag model is now up to a MSRP of $3744 CDN - and while a $700 increase is a lot "in isolation", it is a bit under a 25% increase in real terms - and given how much our buck has dropped, it's nowhere near as bad as it would be if the model was US built.

The other thing they did for 2016 was bring the price of the 300 WM chambered model in line with the 338. So while it had an MSRP of $2070 "last year", they have now brought it in line with the $3744 "sticker" on the 338 - so yes, up 1700 bucks.

So if you didn't buy it when they had it "under listed" before, you are out of luck now.

On most other Sako and Tikka models they look to be up between 10% and 15% for 2016 over the 2015 "wholesale" - which will put them up probably somewhere in the 15-20% in terms of "sticker price" on the shelf (because the increase is passed along as a percentage, not a dollar for dollar mark-up).

So the MSRP increased by 81% - did they change the .300WM, or is last year's and this year's model identical?

I can't see any difference between the 2015 and 2016 model in 300 WM.

Likewise, I can't see why there was a price disparity between the 338 and the 300 - the caliber alone was certainly not enough to make it nearly 1000 bucks more in 2015.

I could make guesses (maybe were considering discontinuing the 300, dropped the price in 2015 to dump them then changed their mind), but things don't always make sense.
