Hey all - got home from my first moose hunt and I found rust under the bolt shroud, a little on the bolt and around the ass end of the firing pin. She's clean as a whistle now and shot true but definitely no what I expected. Had to take the scope off to check for more but the corrosion was all on the bolt and firing pin assembly. Thoughts? Similar experiences? The guy that got me into to this game thought it is bs and I agree.

Not all stainless is rustproof, especially in firearms, it may be a little more resistant. But it still needs to be looked after just like blued steel!

^^^...stains-less then carbon steel, but still should be treated similar especially in a firearm...don't put it away wet, wipe it down with oil occasionally, don't store it in a gun case or humid environment.

My Ruger 10/22 takedown did the same thing. In fact, it rusted in the same environment that my rust-blued firearms didn't.

How much oil did you have on the gun before, during the hunt? I always take some G96. Make sure the gun has a nice coating before and will apply throughout the week as needed,

Patrick

Thanks guys - next trip I will wipe it down with an oily rag at the end of the day. I was expecting no issues and to clean only when I got back but it is not onerous to give it a little more TLC.
