I am wondering what the difference is between long tang & short tang actions? I have a L61R action with the old round bolt shroud and would like to order a fiberglass stock for it. I have an AV & a AIII and don't see a difference between them. I don't have the L61R currently to compare to them as it is at the Gunsmiths right now. He wasn't sure what or if there is a difference?

Also can a Sako 75 clip be converted to the Sako 85 style where you have to push up on the clip to release it so it don't fall out so easy?

Thanks for the help!

I dont think the m75 clip will work. I know I looked at buynig a m85 clip from a fellow CGN but I asked Sako and it was NO.

Never had a problem with my m75 clips falling out-and I have several m75 rifles. My m75ss 300WM been used the most since I bought it new in 1997-98.

As for your first ???, there is a forum site for Sako rifle collectors and maybe they could answer your ??? if nobody here can.

I've lost 2 clips out of a M75, luckily found one in the spring the next year! Brass cartridges were tarnished, but the clip was fine to my surprise! I like the stock on a M75 vs the M85, so this is why I am asking. I walk lots and wear a boonie packer and find that brush hits the clip release and if I don't notice right away the clip falls out and is lost! It fell out 2 other times too, but I noticed right away and was able to find it! Love the M75 except for this fact! Heck I'd even go back to a hinge floor plate like the old AV if I could find one for a M75! Anyone out there have off a M75 RUM or deluxe? Would be willing to make a trade if it works?

There is a difference in the length of the tang from an L61R/AIII to an AV...if you look closely you'll see there is more metal rear of the screw on the AV than the AIII. The screw spacing is the same.

Sako shows a change in the tang when they changed the stamping from AIII to AV in October 1981

You could order a stock for an AV and fill the space with black bedding compound, but why not order a stock for the L61R/AIII? McMillan shows them as an inlet, unless you want one from thier Internet Specials page....looks like they are out of L61R stocks....unless you want one in the Sako Varmint pattern, they show one to fit the L61R

As for the Sako 75 and 85 mag catches...I had a good look at them when I had one of each here.....it would be easy to eliminate the extra catch from the 85 but to convert a 75 to the 85 latch might be harder....unless the mag catches interchange...the 85 has a step on it that the notch in the mag itself has to clear before it will release..pushing the mag up accomplishes this.... maybe the 85 latch can be fitted to the 75 receiver...or maybe the 75 latch can have the step machined or filed into it. It's quite simple to see how it works when you have a good look at it.

I was going to convert my 85 to the 75 style by filing the step off,...but I sold the rifle before I could do it.

I agree, I have been hunting with them for quite a few years and have had no problems....if I had an 85 I would convert it to be like the 75's.

Perhaps you could replace the spring with a stronger one - it seems strange your mag drops so easily.....or drill a hole in the mag, and tie it to your triggerguard. :D
