Allright you guys.I am in need of some more info.So for all you guys that have the wisdom i wish i did, i pose another question.

I once read somewhere else on the web that a cost efficent way of going to a different twist barrel for a Sako L579 was to get a used Rem 700 barrel and having it rechambered to your cartridge{if need be}and the shank rethreaded t o fit the
sako action,

What i was specifically thinking about was finding a fast twist 223 etc... and having it rechambered in 220 swift so i can shoot heavier bullets out of it then the 1 in 14 that is on it now.

I am assuming i would have to be carefull of the diameter of it as well.

Before anyone suggests i just buy a 6mm or 243 let me just say that we can't use anything over .224 in diameter here when it is not a big game season and i really would like to try the heavier bullets out on coyote.Stupid friggin law if you ask me.

I haven't been able to find the info again. So,i am here asking you guys who know this stuff forwards and backwards. Is this actually feasable with a Rem or any other make of barrel???

If so can any of you guys do the work?? prices??

I love the rifle and it shoots very well now so i have a hard time trying to justify to myself the cost of a premium rebarrel just so i can try out the heavier bullets.

I thought if this was possible it might not be to bad of a price to get done and then if it wasen't my cup of tea i could just put the original back on and not be a ridiculous amount out of pocket.

Maybe this is a stupid idea and i should just go with a good quality barrel in a faster twist.

So,What do you guys think?? I'd rather someone let me know an idea is no good than waste time wondering about it when i really don't know myself.

Also,It will only be used hunting Coyote's and the like so the reduced barrel life of a fast twist barrel isin't an issue for me.I allready know about that issue.A fast twist barrel would still probably last me a lifetime of coyote hunting.

Thanks in advance for any help.Robin.

Okay,Okay laugh at me...I was expecting that when i asked the question. It definately does sound sacreligious(spelling?) doesen't it.Don't make fun of me to bad.

I was sort of thinking that if i tried it and liked it i could eventually go to a premium barrel ,but maybe by the time i got a used barrel and the work done i would be better of just putting the money toward the pemium barrel to start with.

Oh yeah,The reason i wanted to try it first to start with was i wasen't sure how the lighter bullets performed out of the faster twist barrel if i still wanted to shoot some of them.

Maybe this is a moot issue??

Personally, I could never put anything stamped Remington on a Sako action, not even a sling.

Not really the question he was asking now was it?

Maybe a gunsmith will chime in (seeing as this is the gunsmithing forum) and give him advice.:D

It costs more (in labour) to alter an existing chambered factory barrel to different action and cartridge... and it is still a factory barrel... it will probably shoot fine but not up to par with a custom barrel.

You can shoot light bullets with a quicker twist but at higher velocities you may run into loss of accuracy and possibly having bullets blow up on the way to the target...

Having a quality custom stainless barrel installed in my estimation could vary from $500 to $600...

Thanks guntech. That answers my questions quite nicely.Obviously not worth doing just to try it out.

Price for the custom barrel is alot better then i expected.Do you do this???

I guess as far as the lighter bullets go sounds like if i want to shoot heavy then light may or may not work.Probably depends on bullet construction as far as holding together goes.

Can't always have your cake and eat it too i guess.Still i suppose anything i could do with the light bullets i could probably do with the heavy in what i use the rifle for.

Please let me know if you do this type of work or not.

If going fast twist would you recommend staying with the stock swift chambering or going to an improved version of the swift or the middlestead.

Thanks for your help.
