I haven't built one of these for awhile now.. I believe this is going into a new "old" McMillan stock... I turned Ted's number 1 contour barrel a little lighter... hopefully the owner will give a range report later... it should be a great hunting rifle.

ah....the 7-08 Super Improved...AKA 284 Winchester:D...very nice.
There's one very similiar out there that Bill Leeper built for me on an L579 action I got from Dennis about 7 years ago.....it's in a McMillan also.....

I had Douglas lengthen the chamber on my 284 to 3.1 " So I could "Load it out" Its on a 1909 action Black T coated and 20 years old. It has same ballistics as factory &mm Mag. It is not for sale. It has done in 6 Moose and10+ deer, 1 bear, and a few coyotes here at the farm . It will belong to my grandson when the time comes(not for a while, I hope!!) JITC

rick i think that sako made it to dougs hand then to mine. its a fine shooter

a fella by the handle RickP (or something like that) had it after me.......interestingly I had Bill make it in 7mm-08 Improved with a 23" PacNor..shot it a bit and decided to sell it....no one wanted it with the 7-08AI chamber....so I rechambered it to 284 Win and it sold right away...and get this...it fed the 284 rounds better than the 7mm-08 AI......go figure....

.555 at muzzle....hmm. I don't think this rifle will be to accurate. Somehow my experience is, that every time I turn the barrel below .625 dia at muzzle ( for 7mm or .30cal ), the barrel shoots less accurate than its potencial. Apparently thinn machined muzzle expands dia of barrel bore to some extent. Bill Calfee, the gunsmith and writer from Precision Shooting has couple theories about it. It is very important for the accuracy of the barrel, that dia at muzzle be touch tighter than dia at the start of the chamber. Exesive muzzle thinning destroys that dependence.

As far as Benchrest accuracy goes I would agree. In the world of hunting accuracy it is a different degree of accuracy... I have seen/had many extremely light barrels shoot under 3/4 moa for 3 shots on a regular basis. Often smaller. I have also seen/had heavier barrels that struggled to do the same...

Guntech, this is SS barrel, .555 at muzzle and 284 Win brass is heavier build than any other in existence which some reloaders are stocking them way beyond even factory Norma ammunition. To turn the barrel thinner than number 1, are You asking customers to sign liability release? You know, if something happens to custommer then You can point that he was asking for no:1 and this is his fault or barrel maker's or steel maker's. Why risk it all for somebody's whim. I wouldn't do it for any money. My 2c worth.
