I have a buddy with a Sako AV that was given to him by a family member a few years ago but it doesn’t have a stock.

I’m looking for a couple of different options and where I can purchase one from. The stock should cost under $1000 I believe, so McMilan is out and no chassis as this is a hunting rifle.

Sako AV 338 Win Magnum stainless steel action and barrel.

Thanks for the help.

Sako AV 338 Win Magnum stainless steel action and barrel.

They never made stainless AV actions. Stainless actions weren't used until the 75 series.
So you need to confirm what model the rifle is. Likely a 75 V if the action is indeed stainless. Or I suppose it could be a plated, coated, or in the white AV if it looks "stainless" and is indeed a AV.

Looks stainless in pics but definetly Sako AV

Looks blued as it should be. B&C used to make stocks for them, and I think HS makes one that either fits, or can be made to fit with minimal work. You may luck out and find a factory take off with an ad on the EE.

However I don't see any bottom metal in the pictures. If that's the case, look for that before a stock. Parts for the earlier sako's can be very hard to find and very expensive when you do.

Do a little poking around on the web, for some reason I want to say the AV will also fit the L61R or AIII stock with minor work around the rear tang. I think the AV had the longer rear tang.

I just looked on the HS website, their stock is for the 691 - which I don't think fits the AV. But again, do a little poking around and try and confirm that. Member "Rembo" should be able to help you with which stocks will and won't fit.

Ok thanks doulble gun i have been looking but no luck yet so this is the next logical step.

I have experience with inletting, bedding and some other minor custom custom stock mods so if worse comes to worse i can put in some elbow grease.

I still have a Sako walnut stock for a long action (has the red factory recoil pad and palm swell) ...I have been holding onto it looking for a barreled action when I discovered it wouldnt fit my Sako's without doing some minor cutting of the tang area -- which I know I would probably FU!. I had done some measurements but would have to do this again. As you should as well - if you were interested. Its the tang measurement that seems to vary as Double Gun says ... I believe (but will confirm again) my stock has the 'short' tang inlet measurement.

BUT be aware that the big calibers ie 338WM and 375H&H Sako factory stocks (wood) usually had TWO reinforcing cross bolts - one at the location of the forward action recoil lug location ... and one behind the action ...my stock only has the forward cross bolt. So I am pretty sure it was not originally designed/intended for a 375 H&H ... BUT FWIW -- I have a lnib 338 Finnsport 338W that has both crossbolts but the rear crossbolt is not easily discernible as it was plugged with stock wood on both sides and then checkered ... quite unusual --- and it was that way out of the box from the factory with the 'blond wood' that one sees occasionally.

Anyway - if interested -- hit me me up by PM ... and I will send a few pics and some measurements when I return home Monday. Its not a bad piece of wood which is why I picked it up originally

Ok, my buddy dropped off the rifle. I cleaned it up and took some measurements, here are some pics for anyone that can help me out. Thanks.

Ps. The bottom mental and all stock screws are here. There is a small unidentified piece that looks like it might be the rear cross bolt recoil lug if I was to hazard a guess.

Does the bottom metal have any engraving on it, or is it plain?

L61R Mag Change of the rear part of the receiver and stamp AIII ==>AV Date:11.01.1982 Serial Number at change: 571277

Serial number states that is a very early model AV, made very shortly after the transition from L61R/AIII. Probable year of manufacture is 1983. I believe that the change to the rear part of receiver refers to the tang length.

Thanks!
R.

The bottom metal is engraved with what looks like to be a stylized out of proportion pronghorn.

Based on the polish and the engraved floor plate it appears to be a ‘Deluxe’ model ... here are some dimensions for the long action Sako stock I have:
Sako stock
Measured ctc between the action screws is 7 3/4” approx.
From centre of the rear action screw to back of tang inlet is approx 3/4”
From centre of front action screw to back of tang inlet is approx 8 1/2”

Bottom measurement of inletting from end to end is approx 8 1/2” (ie overall length of your bottom metal)

OP - wrt to small item you think might be the rear recoil lug. You may find a couple or one small shim that sit over (usually) the rear action screw hole (ie under the tang) - If it is a rear cross bolt, there are two types employed by Sako on heavy recoiling rifles (usually BUT not always) ... one type of rear cross bolt looks very similar to the front cross bolt with exposed polished steel heads - the other type is as I previously described and is inset into the stock with checkered wooden plugs covering it ... I have never actually seen this cross bolt so it may be a steel cross bolt, a section of threaded rod or even a piece of wooden dowel that has been glued across the grain for strength — all I know that plugs of stock wood were removed from this location in the PG and returned and then checkered. Since this is evident when looking at a stock so treated and is in the same location where many stocks have a steel cross bolt - I assume this procedure is intended to serve the same purpose

A good composite stock with internal carbon structure (ICS) does not need cross bolts, I have fitted a few AV's into Tikka T3 and Rem 700 composite stocks. As far as I remember the rear action screw hole will be in the same positions as T3/R700 which is a start. Centre the barrel in the barrel channel and generously relieve the action inlet area with a Dremel until the action sits in the right position. Sometimes helps to do a two stage bedding of the action, outside shape of tang etc can be re-shaped with bedding compound. Then re-inlet the floor plate and bed.
