Any Sako Kodiak owners here? Looking at one in .375 but won't have opportunity to shoulder it. Just wondering about balance and what effect the short barrel has on velocity (ie has anyone chrono'd it?) I know what theory says just wondering about some real world experience.

I've seen lots of .375's on here with 21" barrels, seems like its preferred. They are a sweet looking rifle...

Sako missed the boat on this one......IMHO...a 23-24" barrel and it would be near perfect....

You can get the regular Laminate/Stainless in .375H&H with a 24" barrel. It just doesn't have sights.

This way you have a choice of barrel length (although the Kodiak has a slightly heavier contour).

I have one in .338 WM on the way. If I like it I'll probably end up with a 375 as well. I really like the 22" barrel on my A7's and I hope I like the short barrel on the Kodiak. Time will tell, it is supposed to be here by Monday.

i have one i dont have a crony, i only shot 6 rounds so far but very well balanced and very easy to handle. its my hunting rifle and i wont scope it so @ almost 8 lbs its nice to carry. 375H&H kick is quite tame

I think when Geologist had his .375 H&H Brno 602 shortened to 20", he only lost 50 fps from the 24" length, although I'm not sure what bullet weight he checked that against. Usually the heavier the bullet the less the actual drop in velocity is observed in a short barrel. The .375 certainly doesn't loose velocity at the rate observed when cutting the barrel length of a small bore, so even with the lighter for caliber bullets, the difference is unlikely to be very significant. If it does prove to be a problem, rechambering to a larger cartridge (.375 Ultra or .378 Weatherby) will easily produce long barrel H&H velocities from the short barrel.

Years back I had a Sako with the Manlicher stock in 375 H&H. It had the 20" bbl. That was a very well balanced and nice shooting rifle. I chronied lots of loads and figured you lost almost nothing and I still had more power than factory loads. I shot a black bear with it and it was impressive. The only critter I ever used Grand Slams on. That gun had a bad habit of pulling screws out of the wood from recoil and the front band came loose a few times. I was worried I would shoot it, and the warranty said to pack a screw driver. I pulled the front part of the stock off and used it like that then sold it. I should have put ebony on it up front and kept it. I think the Kodiak or the new Ruger are the same as what I had years ago. Very nice.

Thanks guys. My belief has always been that you wouldn't see the normal 25fps loss per inch of barrel when you moved into the bigger hole like the .375. It seems many of you agree. I guess even with a worst case scenario and I lose 75fps, it's still going to be more than a deadly rifle at 250 yards.
