Hey guys. I just got a sako. Old model TRG. M995. Chambered in 338 win mag. I want to change this over to 340 wby. Do you know if this can be done by just reaming the chamber or do I need to re barrel it. If I need to re barrel it. Where can I order a barrel for it in Canada

I am pretty sure that the mag for the 338 won mag will fit My concern is that the smit may have to cut off the action threads and retread it. And that would leave it with a barrel length of just under 24" And I think that is too short for the 340wby cartridge. And that's if he can cut it. And chamber it. If he cuts it there may not be enough taper on the barrel to leave enough meat to rechamber it. So I am leaning towards a new barrel. Anyone know where to get a krieger barrel here in Canada

I had this same rifle factory chambered in 340 Wby. It was a great rifle and I shot a few moose with it with spectacular results. The only thing I did to it was ad an Answer muzzle brake and I had the recoil pad changed to a Decelerator because the hockey puck they used for a factory pad was not cutting it. I only shot handloads thru it running Barnes XLC 225gr (the blue coloured ones) . I don't think they make them anymore though . With the factory barrel I would be getting 3105 fps with the 225 gr Barnes. Great gun and a nice cycling bolt, but i ended up selling it to build a LR in 338 RUM.
Regards

Pretty sire it won't need to be re-threaded, as the wby is 250 thou longer to the shoulder and should clean up the win mag chamber fine...

The 300 Wby Mag should work, and the 338 LM mag should too. - dan

Still might be tricky to find one, haven't been made in 20 years...

GWDH: I have nothing useful to add but this may be a case where it would be wiser to confirm that your assumption about the .338 Win Mag magazine being able to properly feed the 340 Weatherby before chasing down a reamer or new barrel. There's no moss on the 338 Win Mag and having a reliably repeating .338 would be a little more practical than a single shot .340 ... no?

(incidentally just how big are those great white deer you are hunting??)
