Hey all, sorry changed the post I had the wrong gun initially. T3
I'm in the market for my first "real" bolt action hunting rifle. I have an AR, bunch of pistols and a few milsurps I don't want damaged.
I would like something light, really accurate, low maintenance, and versatile enough to go from coyote to bear and moose. Also limited to about a grand$
Looking @ Sako T3 lam/SS, and the Remi 700 CDL.
Any thoughts/preferences/experiences with these guns?
Also, .308 or 30.06:p:p
Thanks

Tikka

Have a iook at Tikka..good bang for your buck,,,real good shooters..meet all your requirments. One of the most acccurate rifles out of the box..made at the Sako plant, and a little cheaper.

For cartridges, either one will do the job. For rifles, you won't buy a Sako 85 for less than $1500. If your looking @ $1000 for gun & scope, get an Rem SPS or a Savage/Stevens, and buy a good scope.

a Remington 700 SPS stainless in 308/30-06 with a good scope like a Leupold VXII 3-9x40 would be close to ideal for your needs. $700 + $420 scope = good value

"...Also, .308 or 30.06..." You want a short action or a long action? Ballistically the two are identical. The .308 is more inherently accurate. The '06 has a 100 fps advantage with like bullets and you can use heavier bullets. Not that you'd need to though. 165 grain hunting bullets work equally well in both.

"Sako or Remington"?...neither...the Sako won't fit your $1000 budget and the Remington is not the best off the rack new rifle out there....unless you want to start changing things down the road.....get a Weatherby Vanguard...the most under rated bolt action out there...and one of the best.

I agree with Rembo; Vanguards are a very good rifle for the money, not as light as the T3 but other than that they are a bargain.

I like Sako and I like Remington, but this true story makes me think. Roughly 15 years ago two fellows each bought an new rifle in 308, one a Remington 700 BDL and the other a Sako, not sure exactly which model at the time. The Remington fellow bought reloads at a gun show and off to the range they went. After the first round, which had an unusual report, the Remington bolt would not open and I believe they snapped off the bolt handle trying to do so. The Sako fellow, after witnessing this, also fired (???) one of these unknown reloads. When all was said and done, the receiver had split in two, wrecking the 3.5 x 10 Leupold and the barrel of the rifle had cartwheeled down range leaving the shooter dazzled but basicly unhurt. Later examination of the reloads by a good personal friend on mine determined the powder charge was far far below any listed weight in every reloading book in his store thus leading him to believe the powder detinated rather than burned. In the end gunsmith Joe Kroetsch got the Remington up and running and Sako man went on the try and sue the Sako importer. Didn't work. I know this might never happen again, we are all human. This leaves me to thinks that my choice of Remington was a good one. I'll recommend them to anyone willing to ask.

Buy Remington and you gonna be happy. I have few Remingtons and they never let me down. Not big on Weatherbies, in my opinion overpriced.
I like the Krieger barrels on Accumarks.

Another consideration is Tikka T3. Buy in laminated stock, look decent and will not swell under rainy condition.
My buddy was hunting with his Tikka T3 with wood stock, last week with me, and stock was so swollen he couldn't get the bolt out.

My two cents

neither.
get a Ruger M77 mark II. much better designed receiver and action than either, and the bolt/extractor is a Mauser clone. better fit and finish than the Remington or Tikka (not sure about Sako, havent handled any recent ones).
there is a lot of Ruger bashing from the states, a lot of it stemming from a hatred of bill Ruger over gun politics and the 10-round clip thing, but IMO the M77 is not even in the same class as the recent production Remington 700s, Tikka T3s, Savages, etc.

if accuracy is your only concern then get a Savage or Tikka.... although i have been lucky and every Ruger ive owned has been sub-MOA the savages and tikkas are pretty much guaranteed shooters out of the box. but you dont need .5 MOA for hunting.
