Waiting on a new Leupold scope for my Sako L461 in 222. While I am at it I want to upgrade my rings and bases, as they are cheaper weaver right now. What should a guy replace them with? Thanks, from a Sako newbie!

talley slide on base.....with talley steel rings!!! The best money will buy,i have the rings for sale at the moment, cause i wanted my scope lower! PM me for any questions i know excactly what u can get away with with the talley system! Clay at PRF is my supplier!

The Leupold ringmounts slide right onto the Sako dovetails, look good, and work perfectly. They also allow you a bit more eye relief if you need it. The original Sako rings, as mentioned, are hard to find and actually are pretty ugly next to the Leupolds. Optilocks are the silliest option imaginable. You have a rifle with beautiful, well-designed integral dovetails machined right into the receiver...why on earth would you want to mount bases onto the dovetails, and then rings onto the bases?

How about on a hard kicking rifle? I bought an AV in 416 Rem Mag, upon test firing the scope with rings and all came flying back and hit me in the face then fell on the ground, upon inspecting I also noticed that the scope had slid in the rings as well and cut almost all the way through the scope body, the rings used were the optilocks with the little bases.

Will this setup hold up when properly torqued down or should I be looking at something else?

The Leupold ringmounts worked for me for years and over 1200 rounds on a .375H&H. Without bases, the rings are clamped onto the tapered dovetails...recoil tightens the whole set-up, rather than loosening it. You are dealing with the absolute minimum number of parts, so there's very little to fail. And I very much doubt that the Talley system, or any system using a separate base, can place the scope as low as the Leupold rings. On a .416, the extra little bit of eye relief might come in handy.

To help prevent scope slippage in the rings, I think you would be wise to lap the rings and then use a little powdered resin or maybe silicone adhesive inside them.

Optilocks have a set on a 22-250 that is about there holding power. The tallys are nice as i moved up into the 30mm scope now and have a few sets of one inch old sako mounts around The sako one pice ring optilocks mounts are ok with a spot of glue you might say.

First off,

POST A PIC OF YOUR RIG!!!!

Second off,
I have an L461 Vixen Varmint (wide forend, heavy barrel) in the famous .222 Rem. I have Optilock bases and rings and love them. I am unfamiliar with the others mentioned. If you reload try 20.5gr IMR4198 (not Hodgden) BR4 primers and 50gr SPSX or 50gr Blitz and shoot half inch holes all day long. I love that rifle the most out of all of them.

Those do look pretty good. Sako's old style rings were functionally excellent, but homely. If these work as well, they're a huge improvement.

This is a little off topic but does anyone know where to get rings that work with the Tikka M65 receiver? Is it the same as the Sako?

I still have a set of real Sako medium rings kicking around.
I don't think they're ugly at all.
