Hey guys, I have chance to get a TRG-22 for a good deal and was wondering which barrel length you would go with? I'm leaning towards the 26" just because if I feel I want to go to a shorter length I can. Also, purely for aesthetic reasons, desert tan or black?

Ask yourself a question:
What is a purpose of this rifle?
Short or long range?
In .308 you may loose around 15fps for ever inch

For a "tactical" rifle that may have to be deployed from a vehicle or used in somewhat confined spaces the shorter length may be most appropriate but unless your intended useage envisions either of the aforementioned scenarios, go with the 26" tube.

Having owned a number of 26"-28" heavy barrelled rifles, I can tell you that unless absolutely necessary, I'll never own another.

In .308 Win., a 20" barrel will do everything you want it to do and then some. Except for looks, why burden yourself with the extra weight and size?

My experiences exactly, but I shoot to hunt, not Fclass. If I shot F, I would want the longest possible.

Interesting, I did not know a TRG-22 could be had with a barrel shorter than 26" from the factory. Or is this a customization?

I saw one of the 20" TRG's at the range this morning - nice rifle of course - and it would sure be an easier carry than mine with the 26" tube but assuming you are set on wanting to shoot LR ( say, out past 500 ) then I'd stick with 26". You loose a bit ( not a whole bunch but a bit ) of FPS per inch and out past 500 yards or so you will miss that extra velocity.

I had a TRG 22 with a 20 "barrel and shot it out to 900 m with good success. I think bullet selection is more important than barrel length when shooting a .308 at longer ranges.

EC makes a fair comment. Perhaps the answer is "get both" and then YOU tell US which you prefer :)

Hmmm... Sound advice from everyone. Thanks. Still trying to read up as much as I can about the long versus short. I came across a couple of articles:

http://www.tacticaloperations.com/SWATbarrel/

http://www.sniperschool.com/barrel-length-revisited

http://www.sniperschool.com/sniper-rifle-barrel-length

I'm supposed to give my answer whether I want the 20" or 26" by tonight as supplies are limited (20" vs. 26" and black vs. desert tan). Hopefully I'll figure it out by the time I'm finished work.

A lot of evidence points to:

1.) A 20" barrel creating maximum velocity in the 308 cartridge, and

2.) shorter barrels being stiffer than longer barrels, creating maximum accuracy.

Right now you are stuck with the Sako. There is an outfit in the US that has a conversion to use the less exspensive AI magazines. Their kit includes a new chassis component, and it is not cheap, at around $300.00, plus two magazines for a total of $400.00. I guess it depends on how many magazines you require. If one extra is all you need, then just get the Sako mag.

Thanks for the info. I guess in for a penny, in for a pound...

Sako does not make inexpensive accessories, which is a bit of a bummer. The replacement mag system I mentioned would allow for an improved COAL, which, to some, would be worth the money.

Agreed, I sure appreciate the 20" barrel though when dive-rolling out of a Humvee behind enemy lines.
