Sako TRG 22 - Reloading to the Lands, Magazine feeding issue

Hi Guys,

I'm developing a new load for my TRG 22. Previously I've never really reloaded to the lands. Mainly because my other rifles are semi's and the I find with the Sako TRG 22, even though the magazine has generous length, it won't feed rounds that are touching the lands. Currently I'm loading 50 thou off the lands to get the magazine to feed.

What happens is when you slide the bolt forward, the round cants in the magazine and the bolt slips over top the round and slide above it. Has anybody encountered this before or have any solution? Most of the time when I'm at the range I load singe shot, but I'm a bit of a perfectionist and would like my rounds to feed from the magazine just because.
 
what kind of bullets are you using
tengent ogives usualy are not very affected by seating depth
sequent ogives like berger VLD will be more affected

if load to the lands is that important, the only 2 solutions I can find are fit a longer mag or step the barrel back and rechamber with a shorter throat

I dont think Tangent or secant ogives have much to do with feeding problems in a magazine.

But for results on the target, what you say is generally true.

I am interested with this feeding issue. I have the same/similar Problems with a rem 700 magazine. I am going to machine the lower part of the stock where the bottom metal seats by about .030" to raise my whole magazine location to come into better alignment with the bolt.

My TRG 22 allows me to touch the lands with a 178 Amax and feed from the mag, but it is tight. The 168 Berger Hunting is just around 10 thous too long to feed from the mag when touching the lands.

What do you mean by "canting"? Which part of the round is hanging up on which part of the magazine?
 
Sorry, I think canting was a bad word for it. It applies to rotation about the bullets/barrles axis. What is happening is the round in the magazine isn't moving straight up, the end of the case is pushed down while the bullet end says upright, and as a result the bolt slides overtop. The round is rotating in the magwell and the bolt ends up pushing it down and sliding overtop of the round. This only happens the round is too long. If the round is your standard 2.8 CAOL, and perhaps a little longer, then it feeds fine.
 
Here's the load that produced a 3-shot, single hole, at 100m in my TRG-22

Brass: Once fired Hornady Match
Primer: CCI-BR2
Bullet: 165gr Nosler Accubond
Powder: 45gr of RL-15
COAL: 2.840"

I'm curious to hear a bit more about stepping back the barrel and getting it rechambered with a shorter throat. My Bruger and Thomet APR can't be loaded to the lands either because the magazine is too short.

Like the OP, I too find it unacceptable to be forced into such unseemly compromises by having long throats and short magazines.
 
I believe they do it on purpose to discourage people from reloading. Technically using reloaded ammo voids the warrenty's on most guns. Blame the lawyers for that one.
