Well, turns out SAKOs are nice rifles...who knew? lol

Good morning all-just got back from a late-summer trip to S. Alberta and in spite of the extreme heat, there were some gophers making their presence known. Got a chance to try a SAKO P94S and even shoot it offhand=what a pleasure! The gun looked exactly like this model and in spite of it appearing to be a heavy barrel, it was very easy/comfortable to shoot offhand. Is that what this stock style is for? (thinking "yes" :) )

I think I'd be wanting to do allot of offhand shooting to commit to a stock style like this, but who's running SAKO 22s as their primary shooters, and exactly what model are you shooting? The "QUAD" guns have always been a bit of a temptation and probably executed beautifully. Always wondered if a SAKO QUAD in 17M2 might actually be an accurate gun? I'm 0/2 at least chasing that down.

I can sure see the appeal of a standard barrel/sporter stock with nice walnut...perhaps the SAKO equivalent of a CZ452 American? What model would you SAKO guys suggest?

Worth mentioning-not sure what the SAKO magazines cost, but boy...putting a loaded one in the gun is about as nice as that simple operation can go. Not something I ever give thought to unless it's a fussy fit...but this P94S seemed to almost pull the mag in once you had it about 90% seated. Am I imagining that? The Alberta sun is intense in 37C conditions...you never know. :)

Pictures welcome-I'd love to see what you're running, and would be interested in knowing about any negatives. I don't think the gun I was using gets much TLC, I know ejection wasn't amazing. Is that typical?

Sorry, no pics as it's not my rifle, but my buddy's QUAD shoots like a lazerbeam with mini mags. His is plastic. I don't get the attraction to plastic these days, but he loves it (as so many others seem to). Despite being plastic, the metal-to-stock fit was excellent. I mounted a scope and sighted it in for him. Ejection was fine, but I found the action was a tad rough compared to my Anschutz and CZ, but it was brand new so I expect it'll slick up with use. The iron sights are soooo nice on these rifles. The trigger is top notch too.

P94s

Hey 22lr , you are rite on the magazines the load in
and feed beautifully.

I shot this Varminter for a few years they
are all they are bragged to be.

Good Groups Man.

Beauty. Thanks guys and yes, need to get my hands on a couple more of these. Swapping barrels would be fun, but considering it would be 22LR 99% of the time..maybe not. lol

thanks again

The 94s sure is fun to shoot and kick myself for selling the first one.
Yes the plastic mags are spendy , back in the day they could be had from No Sale Sports for $90.00 for a plastic one.
A couple weeks back there where two in the EE that didnt last long and under $800 no less.
Buyers remorse and to slow on the I'll take it on my end.
skwerl, nice looking rig Sir.

I also recently discovered the joy of Sako rifles and shoot standing mostly. The Quad Hunter Pro is my main peep sight rifle, but not my main main rifle.

Pro's:
The stock is my favorite hunting style stock by far. The flush fit mags, profile of the forend, palm swell, grip angle and trigger reach are perfection for me. Very well balanced between great handling and ergonomics in the shooting position. All my other gunstocks feel inferior after I handle / shoot the Sako. Weight is going to between 5.7 to 6.1 pounds ish depending on wood. Trigger is good and I think same as the Tikka T3x's. The iron sights are a bit taller than, say, a CZ, but you can drop an anschutz sight on it and it'll just work and the stock is less compromised between scope vs irons.

Cons:
Feeding is an issue. I shot Sk Standard plus and Norma Tac22 initially. The bolt will gouge the piss out of the next round in the mag. Last round doesn't want to feed because weak mag spring; the round doesn't want to pop into the bolt face / under the extractor. I mostly ended up single feeding the gun (works great this way with the factory mag in place), but one day tried CCI SV and it functioned acceptably with this round and much better than the SK/Norma. I wonder if it's due to the sticky lube on the target ammo, especially the Norma (made by RWS). Ejection has been among the most reliable, out of the rifles I have.
The bolt isn't as smooth if that matters to you. Most bolts I've seen, there's a slot for the bolt release to ride in, but the Sako, the bolt release just rides on the bolt body and engage a slot in the bolt to stop it. Pro of this is once you open the bolt, it will stay open even with the muzzle straight down... pretty handy for single feeding. On my Anschutz, the bolt will slide if you look at it sideways. The wood also tends to be very plain, if that matters to you.

Overall, it has some seriously good qualities and some serious quirks... it's one of my favorite shooters after I learned to use cheaper ammo lol.

got a few sakos

p94s and the fancy models and even a benchrest model in a real br stock

have not fired a round in any of the ones I have left

was going to but our rifle range was in the wildfires and is getting rebuilt now, so maybe later this fall

probably sell off most of them as getting old, what a shame for me

I've got a Quad that I've used in SK with the 17 Mach 2 barrel (ridiculously accurate, and devastating, round) and this year with the HMR barrel. The Sako rifles are worth their price.

The gun your refering to us a Sako P94S Range, I know as mine was the first one brought into Canada. Stoeger made me put down a $800 deposit before ordering, as they thought no one would spend $1300 on a rimfire, and didn't want to get stuck with it! Mine was pulled off the Finish production line made for Euro sales, so came threaded for a sound suppressor. When Stoeger realized these would sell in North America, they came with non threaded muzzles. Not sure when they started bringing them in with threaded nuzzles later on.
Mine has been my main 50BR rifle for years, unfortunately the accuracy fell of after shooting about 5000 rounds a year for about 20 years, mine loved SK yellow std vel. Also certain lots of CCI st vel target. It's sitting waiting for a new Benchmark barrel, will see how it like this new barrel soon

As an admirer of Sako rifles I have a decent collection from the early p46 to current.
My go to is the new Sako synthetic P04R with an after market trigger spring. Although my favorite is the p94s.
