Sand blasting question

Don't use sand, I use glass beads or fine ground glass from Princess Auto.
Air pressure you use will also make a difference on the look.

You can use sand and then wire brush the surface with a soft stainless wheel at about 600 rpm. It takes the roughness of blasted sand away...

The 40-60 crushed glass from Princess Auto is the trick for sure. Not too rough, makes a real nice finish. I just paint over it with clear "wheel" coating from Canadian Tire, either matte or gloss looks good.

I have been racking my brain....for some thing as simple as sandblasting,it was starting to make me bonkers:HR: trying to find something that does the job!!

80 to 100 grit aluminum oxide powder was our go to media. You'll need a pretty good gun though. We destroyed one of those regular duty blasting guns in 10 minutes.

80 grit aluminum oxide is what we use in the shop. You will need the steel to be clean and have an even porous finish to get the best results. Here is a few pics of the end result.

How soft soft?

I did a fair bit of blasting of steel and aluminum bike parts, at one time in my past. Glass bead was the gold standard for pulling up a nice finish or stripping paint, etc. without doing too much surface change.

Glass bead fed into a pressure washer cleaned up cylinder heads to near factory fresh looking, though it was a production to do, requiring a fair size, tarped in area to recover the bead, if you did.

But glass bead at low pressures will blend over the sharp edges of any scratches or pitting, without leaving sharp deeper pits, which are more what you get out of the AlOx or crushed glass particles.

It's really nice to have access to a couple types of medial and see what gives you the look you want.

C02 Blasting (dry Ice)

Has anyone heard of or have experience using c02 blasting to remove the paint finish on a gun to create a two tone look. I want to create a two tone look for my M&P and this method has been suggested as an alternative to bead blasting and sand blasting the melonite finish off. The process is regularly used to clean off stainless surfaces using dry ice with no residue. Anyone??
