Sanding a plastic mag?

Well I bought a new 30-round mag for my Rem 597 and it's near impossible to insert or remove. I literally have to put the rifle between my legs and yank with both hands to get the damn thing out. So I whipped out my other mags (both 10 and 30 rounders) and it turns out this new mag is ever so slightly larger along the fore/aft axis. Being the retard I am, I totally trashed up the mag's packaging in the process of opening it so returning it to the store isn't an option.

Now before I attempt to sand down the front and rear sides to get it to fit, is it even advisable to sand a plastic mag or am I just going to destroy the thing in the process?
 
first , if you still have the bill from store, try to exhange it.
They should .
But if they are #### heads, I would use a fine sharp file ( ie -as new one)
should turn out O.K.
 
Use a super fine grit.... really fine... or it will look very scratchy. Maybe give it a spray bomb after it is fit properly to cover the sanding. Up to you.
 
i had to sand a few of my butler creek mags to fit in my Krinker Plinker and it worked out just fine. I used a file first to get the bulk off, then just regular sand paper to smooth it out. Didn't take long at all
 
Regardless, it will look "cloudy" when done, but it will be cosmetic only. :)
I know what you speak of as I had a 597 with a few of those mags. I also ended up sanding to fit :)

*Note, little snug is ok... if it is too loose it will rock around when using the rifle and that is worse (speaking from experience).
 
I'm not worried about the aesthetics of the modded mag, especially since that part's gonna be inside the mag well when it's in use. Ideally I'd like it to fit like my 10-rounders: loose enough that if I hit the mag release they drop right out, but not so loose that they rattle around while inserted. My other 30-rounder isn't nearly as tight as the new one but it doesn't drop when I hit the mag release, I have to pull it out. I'm gonna leave that one untouched, because it's not an issue for me.

If only I had a proper set of calipers to measure the exact size... :(
