I just stumbled on a stack of Hornady 150gr 3031 bullets...thought I might make some plinking loads for my 300 H&H. I've got an older Hornaday manual that indicates max load of 60.6gr H4895 with that bullet.

Never having tried the H4895/reduced loads procedure, just wanted to check my work before proceeding.

So, I take 60% of that max load, and work up from there, correct? Start around 36.4? No filler or anything required?

Cheers,
DS

Yes. Fill the case up to where the bullet would be. Weigh that charge. Your minimum is 60% of that. No filler required. I have shot lots of .308 with cast bullets (jacketed are fine too) and 30 grains of h4895. It's economical and fun plinking.

Sounds like you've got it. I've used the reduced load rule for D4895 and IMR4895 quite a bit in 308 and 30-30. I have gotten great results. It's my goto powder for accurate cast rifle loads. An excellent alternate is UNIQUE if you can find it. It's cheaper than H4895 because the charges are less. 15-18 gr.

You got it man. It works great. I use it a lot in my 43 Mauser and also 303 British reduced loads.

60% of the listed max load. No filler. The case looks empty but it works and is safe.

Don't do what the second post says. It's not 60% of the case capacity. It's 60% of the max load listed for H4895 with the bullet weight you are using

I trust you have the document from Hodgdon on using this powder for reduced loads? Good document. Now if only I could find that powder somewhere!

Not sure where you got this formula from, but that’s not correct. You take a published max load and reduce it to 60%. You don’t “fill the case”

Wow. You better do some research before you cause serious accident

Incorrect. You use the max listed charge. ‘Filling the case’ is dangerous, more so with a huge case like a .300 Holland and faster powder like 4895.
