Hello,

I am looking for a sanity check. When I lived in the states I bought and re-stocked ( Boyd's ) an H&R m1 Garand. When I moved to
Canada it came with me.

I am looking to sell/trade it for a hunting rifle and would like to get some opinion on the value. It's an excellent shooter - I have a bunch
of clips and LC brass to sell along with it.

I have heard varied numbers from 2.5K to 5K and tend to believe more the 2.5 end - but that's why I am writting here !. Very nice
looking rifle and I have kept it maintained.

Thanks in advance for any input !
Steve

Not sure about garand prices but a great many of them for sale here are not "surplus collectables" , they are receiver up builds done here in canada with available parts.
I would think the genuine , complete surplus rifles, restocked or not, are probably the ones fetching the higher end $$$ for collectable value rather than value of parts and gunsmithing fees.
I have been watching for a decent surplus garand at a reasonable price (for me) and I just decided I would rather spend the cash on something a little more modern as I am not a garand collector.

Dealers have stock of original 308 T2 Garands right now for $2500.
A post war 30'06 in a Boyd's stock would likely be in the $1600-$1800 range depending on condition.

There is a premium for originality and condition. Many Garands had original barrels and stocks in service, usually attributable to the efforts of the clumsy recruit. The HRA Garands were made to a good quality line and HRA drawing numbers appear on many parts, incl barrel, trigger group and bolt. The stocks have a distinctive extended "porch" to the rear of the receiver.

Unless you need to sell in a hurry, start a little bit more optimistic with a higher price and be patient. The market will always dictate and something above average ought to fetch a better than average price. A true collector will pay for a better example, all original rifle vs re parked parts kits.

That said, the market up here is limited by by sheer fact of smaller size, and Canadian buyers tend to be, more, how shall I say “frugal” vs what I see on US websites.

Try an advanced search of the Mail Surp Equipment Exchange for the last year or two and look for sales history on similar rifles.

Good luck
