Turns out the gun is a Santa Barbara Model 1000 chambered in 7x57. I think this gun was sold as a kit, whereby you would receive an unfinished stock and checking tool with the dissembled firearm. The owner would customize and finish the stock themselves. It's in alright condition. It shoots reasonably straight (3" groups at 100 yards with irons). The bore isn't the best though, there is a bit of rust. Based on the crown I'd say she had been used a bit prior to being stored in a safe and not really maintained.

Original Post:

Has any heard of a Santa Barbara chambered in 11x57? It's a bolt action firearm. I've not seen it, but a guy at work was going to destroy it because he has no use for it. I said I'd take it but now I have no idea what I'm getting into. Based on the chamber I am thinking this gun must be very old. Once I see the firearm I will have a better idea. For now, anyone know anything?

Fair points gents. I don't know much about it past what I have mentioned.

I figured that round sounded old enough to be some sort of obscure military round.

I suppose once I see it I will have a better idea of where I should be asking these questions. :/

Spanish Government arsenal at Santa Barbara has been around for a long time.

Entirely possible is it a SEVEN x57, which was official Spanish cartridge from 1892. It could be a SUPER rifle.

People without a lot of interest usually don't have the expertise to know one from another. Media is bad for this, thinks everything with a "shoulder thing that goes UP" is an "AK-47 which spews hundreds of cop-killer bullets every second" even if it has a 5-round mag. Remember, JFK was killed with a .30-30 Mauser: the CBC said so. But I have a "6mm Mauser" which avoided the town dump during the LGR and it looks a lot like the same rifle (both are 6.5x52 Mannlicher-Carcanos). As to what a 6mm or an 11mm might actually mean, a lot of people are not clear on the concept, not one little bit..... and they really are not interested. They just want rid of this dangerous "thing".

Thing to do, friend, is get the critter into your hot little hands, take a few pics and post them here. THEN we can help and will be happy to do so.

But GRAB IT for sure: pigs in pokes are ALWAYS interesting.

Good luck!

I will definitely get it off of him. Once I do, I will take a lot of photos and post them.

Could be just a bad stamping job, that makes more sense then a gun chambered in something like 11x57. Of course, Brutus might be right. This could be something akin to .43 Spanish.

Ummm at a risk of stating the obvious Gents; as milsurp guys when is the last time we saw a milsurp stamped with the caliber X length marking? Especially a mauser? They usually require a chamber casting to verify cartridge type.
High end sporters yes. But milsurps?

I think is it a sporter the more I look into it. I posted here because of the caliber being obscure but I think it might be the wrong sub. Either way, people have shown some interest so I will be posting some pictures in this thread.

There was also a RIMLESS version of the old 11.15x60R made, back in the 1920s, in a smokeless version, used for heavy-game hunting Africa-style.

In a commercial rifle, another possibobility.

I think further speculation is silly without photos as a start.
