SAPI plates

I have a quick question about the SAPI plates shown on your website. In my understanding of the body armor control act here in BC, and Alberta. Citizens holding PAL/RPALs are permitted to purchase, and own soft, and composite body armor for personal use. So my question is the LEO restriction a store policy, or a government policy?

Thanks,

Mike

Hey Mike

Armor Express limits me to sell to only LE for their body armor. With this new law we will look into other options but for now we only carry 1 line of Armor Products.

Thanks for the quick response!

I tried to call both the CBSA, and the CBP with no luck, and cant find where body armor sits regarding importing it into Canada, and if the US DND would have a problem with that. Do you know the laws on individuals importing body armor?

As far as I know there is none. But make sure you read the new rules for owning them in BC now. I still dont get half of what the BC government is trying to do with this new law. All i know is We as a store have to pay them to sell armor to police. Kind of a money grab in my eyes.

PAL holders in BC, like AB, are now allowed to possess body armour without a permit. There are no federal laws against body armour. You can import it legally and own it legally in BC. It is too bad that many distributors voluntarily restrict sales.

Hi,

This is on my own reading, and is not legal advice.

The BC Body Armour Control Act requires a permit to own body amour; however the related regulations state that those with a PAL for firearms are exempt.
S 2(2) of the Regs: (d) is an individual who holds a valid licence issued under the Firearms Act (Canada) authorizing the individual to acquire or possess a firearm.

In that same Act it also requires vendors to sell body armour only to those with permits or exempt (e.g. if you have a PAL)

As for import from the US, Level III and higher body armour, OR military designed/in-service body armour is controlled by ITAR; you would require US Dept of State approval for individual importation.

Generally speaking, anything IIIA or lower is not State Dept controlled, and may only need a Dept of Commerce BIS form done up (much easier).

Canadian Border Services CAN take an interest in your import; I ordered a ballistic helmet from the US, and got a phone call from CBSA asking why I bought it. I still received it, but ppl are watching. I'm not sure if a Canadian IIC is required, although some vendors may insist you get one (this is online).

If you're not .mil/LE Bulletproofme dot com based in the US will sell soft armour to you; as for hard plates you can try some Canadian retailers (M&P Tactical, MSA Paraclete, heck even Armor Express directly etc) with an explanation of your situation...if no joy, you'll have to try the Isrealis/EU (I think we have another board member looking into that option...you may PM if you want more info)

Good luck with M&P tac. Even if you're Mil/LE, you pretty much need a end user cert to purchase from them.

I havn't tried ordering from them but their is an israeli company on ebay selling what looks like top of the line stuff for a few hundred dollars. Check it out. Ebay.ca

Caveat Emptor.

Ref the Max Pro Plates froms SRS, I think that one run was made by Ceradyne...but they are "heavy", and not operator/swimmer cut...then again if they're the only show you've got...

All the level 4 plates are about 8lbs , unless you want to pay 1000 USD per plate for those crazy multi-shot ultra light one.

Or you can get the real ESAPI (btw SAPI refers to the family of plates for the US military). They are mostly 6lb conjunction plates.

Also, not all light weight Level 3 plates can stop SS109 ( c77 balls). A 3lb poly plates most like will not take SS109.

Finally, with the emergence of bonded bullet with signicant amount of solid brass like the SOST round , the typical level 3 plates are questionable since they are not tested for bonded bullets with a significant brass base.

Hey there saw the post and im interested in getting SAPI plates ive got a PAL and im in the security industry and i work in some dangerous areas(yeah who ever thought that the mall would be so crazy..) How much?? i live in BC to.

Also it takes special plates to stop M855's...

Something to keep in mind, especially when you spend time at ranges where a majority of people rock M855's...

so is the consensus that a SAPI plate capable of stopping a 5.56x45 or 7.62x39 isnt possible to purchase i was really looking forward to being able to get some. With the way the gangsters are working out here the indiscrimanate shootings of basically anyone in the wrong place at the wrong time seems like it might be a good idea to invest especially since it seems that alot of these guys dont seem to register there fully automatic weapons(who woulda thought...)
