I leave on Friday for my moose hunt around Hudson Bay , Saskatchewan. Due to work issues, I could not leave with the rest of my hunting party and I have to join them a week late.

The area is full of bears from what I'm being told and with bear tags so cheap ($16) I picked one up.

I have never hunted bear and I'm not really there for a bear hunt but if I get my moose early enough I'm not going to waste two weeks of holidays and come home early.

With this all in mind what are some things to keep in mind? Has anyone hunted the area (zone 49ish)? What to look for in a good bear? Are their any other species of bear in the area to confuse with the black bear that I have a tag for?

Thanks in advance while I try and do some more searching on the web.

Just doing some searching on the net and I feel truly blessed to live in Saskatchewan.

A US resident hunting trip can run up to 4000 dollars for 6 days. The cheapest I found was 2500 dollars. Glad I picked up that 16 dollar tag at Crappy Tire last night.

You can rest assurd that any bear you see will be covered by your tag. In other words, all bear in Saskatchewan are black bears. OK, the keyboards are already flying, pointing out they haves seen/shot/heard of/ brown bear in Sask. Relax, they are all black bears, regardless of their color.
Since you are arriving late in your hunting camp, I would look for bear on the remains of any moose the earlier hunters may have shot.

Look for a bear that has "small" ears and "short" legs. Those are signs of a big bear. Look at the anatomy of a bear - make sure you don't shoot too high on that broadside shot. Keep shooting until the bear is dead, they seem to have the ability to drop, squirm around and then bounce to their feet and run off.

Good luck!
