Hello my Saskatchewan friends!

Apparently I have the opportunity to head over to Sask this year for the Canadian Resident rifle season in late November. I have the time booked off work and I will be headed just North of Prince Albert.

I'm sure thats the last thing you wanted to hear was another B.C. boy hunting whitetail in Saskatchewan;)

I'm in the process of getting permission to hunt on some private farm land in that area, inlaws family sort of thing. Right now I'm not sure if I'll be hunting in 50, 53, or 64 but the regulations look the same for those regions anyhow.

Is there much Crown land in that part of Saskatchewan?
Are ground blinds an effective hunting method in that area?
Are the bucks responsive to rattling and grunting or doe bleats that time of year?

I would appreciate some guidance on this. I'm pretty excited already and its only March:redface: I've been trying to get over to Sask for the last 3 years but have missed out. I am aiming for a deer that will be better than my best B.C. buck which would be a 160 class deer. By the looks of things there are quite a few outfitters running in that area and they are pulling out some Whoppers. Hopefully luck and patience will pay off:)

I don't want to "piss on your parade" but in my opinion the P.A. area is too far north for the big boys. In that area you will be hunting forest, lake shores and logging roads. There is some crop land in the P.A. area but the limitations are the lack of access, because of no roads and very often heavy snow accumualations.

I find that the big whitetails are located farther south in the grain fields, pastures, slough bottoms and coulees.

In order to hunt the flat open areas you will be best suited with a flat shooting rifle, something from a 270, 308, 30-06 or a 300 Win Mag. Yes others will do and I may have missed a few but you get the idea.
 
HORNHUNTER.............I do not have the Sask. Regs on hand but if you do, check and tell Brambles where the dividing line is on non-resident Canadians. I know some of the southern units do not allow non-resident Canadians (or Non-resident aliens) to hunt big game.

I understand what your saying but I don't really have much choice on where I can hunt. I don't know anyone in Saskatchewan and have never been there before so I don't have permission anywhere else. This is my first hunt there so I expect a bit of a learning curve. I'm use to hunting thick bush so that shouldn't be too much of a change for me. I'm not sure what kind of farm they own but I'm in the process of getting ahold of them. The inlaws say that there are huge deer up there but I don't know what they think a huge deer looks like:rolleyes:

The rifle selection is covered, I have a nice variety of flat shooting hunting rifles.

Brambles...........I am sure you will go where the relatives are regardles, but I found the info I was asking Hornhunter for. Canadian residents can't hunt in zones 15, 16, 17, 31, 32, 33, and 34. Residents only in those. That's the way I read it......if one of you Saskatchewan guys knows better and I have botched things up.....feel free to jump in here and set things straight.
 
there are lots of big deer around the PA area. The only thing is that if your relatives farm is really close to town it is an archery only area. There is also lots of crown land around PA and the northern forest is very close as well. You will find that if you stop and ask for permission that most farmers in Sask are quite acomidating. Good luck.
 
There's good hunting to be had north of PA. Both of these deer were taken out of the area your talking about (a few years ago).

I live in PA and there are alot of big deer up this way you just cant see them like the ones down south theres to much forest. But If you can get premisson to hunt one of the fields that has been carved out of the forest you'll see tons of deer. Im not a deer hunter i hunt predators but almost everytime im out i see shooter bucks.
 
No, there are no big deer or any deer for that matter around P.A. I think mad cow and CWD got them all. Better go somewhere else. Maybe way down south. I think that would be a great choice! :)
 
I already told you guys ................. there are a bunch of areas in southern Saskatchewan where he can't hunt.

Brambles...............you can come to Manitoba and I will take you deer hunting.....then you can take me out in BC, where as these guys have pointed out, there are no big deer.;)
 
To answer your questions. ground blinds can work if you dont mind sitting and if you can find an open enough area. I would try rattling but I my self have never had much sucess getting them to come out, what I have found to be successful is a combination of buck grunt and doe bleat. I use them while I have been out walking cuz sitting is just to boring for me and to cold. I had 3 deer come to me within an hr while grunting farthest away was 75 yrds and closest was 6 feet. If walking keeps ur eyes peeled cuz they seem to show up when least expected and appear from nowhere.. The 1st deer was about 75 yrds and when he came out I was out in a clearing not expecting him to show so quickly, I took a shot with muzzeloader and missed do to me feezing to death in -40 with wind chill. 2nd buck came up 10 mins after I missed previous one as I laid down in some tall grass calling towards a bush and he snuck up behind me at 6 ft, when I wirled around to get a shot he bolted and again I missed( i couldnt pick him upin the scope good enough and took hail mary shot) 3rd one came in 15 mins later at around 40 yrds but he was a tiny, tiny buck so I let him grow up since I was looking for 140 or better. all 3 came into grunt tube. Next time I will bring my shot gun with open sights. This all happened last week of Nov.

Oh there are some big deer in B.C. but not as visible as in Alberta or Saskatchewan. I'll still shoot my B.C. bucks and maybe a bull elk but I like to see new country as well and not having to be guided in Saskatchewan makes it a no-brainer. Plus haven't you ever wanted to try something new?

I think the largest typical whitetail in B.C. was actually found and not shot. I believe it had a Net score of around 193. The second place buck is quite a bit farther down on the scale than that one but I can't remember what it scored.
Alberta and Saskatchewan has way more top bucks than B.C. if you look at it like that.

I'm alway open to new ideas and to meet new people.
What are the regulations regarding Canadian resident hunters in Manitoba? What can we hunt there? Any moose open to Canadian resident aliens over there?

I'm not really up on the B.C. regulations regarding canadian resident aliens hunting in B.C. but I can look in to it. What would you like to hunt?

make sure you come the only week that you can hunt. Canadian res can only hunt on week in novemberr for deer.

the areas you mentioned do get hunted hard from locals and by outfuitters, but there are some good deer there. baiting in the big bush of 64 can produce big hogs.

my parents live at candle and my mom had a "bait" pile out all fall and she had an old 150 class 6x5 there all fall and untill christmas. he would have went in the 160 but wasnt very even.

Brambles.........I'll PM you. Moose shouldn't be a problem at home for you. I can understand coming out here for whitetail.

I am interested in mule deer.....haven't shot one for a few years.
