The Saskatchewan government now offers free hunting licenses to anyone that has served in the Canadian Armed Forces.
Link below. I tried to copy and paste the relevant section but my phone doesn't want to cooperate
https://www.saskatchewan.ca/residen...g/licences-for-canadian-armed-forces-veterans

UPDATE: Apparently I posted wrong information. The free licences are for FORMER members of the CAF that have received an honourable discharge.
I have edited my original post to correct it. I mistakenly said that current serving members were included but I now know that was incorrect.

This does not apply to current serving members.

They advertise this wrong all the time and I keep pointing it out to them and they keep making the same erroneous "advertisement". This does not apply to all CAF veterans as they often advertise it as on social media, emails, etc. This only applies to honourably DISCHARGED veterans (see VACs definition of a Veteran).

I'm not trying to diminish anyone's service but this currently applies to someone who finished Basic Training and released after 6 months but not someone who is currently serving, 20+ years and several deployments. I think they missed the mark on this one but that's my opinion.

Doesn't seem right that a person who completes minimal training, then releases from the CF, reg or res, and becomes classified as a Veteran.

I didn't mean to start a debate on what/who is a Veteran. Simply pointing out that the Ministry is poorly advertising this program.

If they want to set the bar at honourably discharged, I'm fine with it but they need to stop advertising it as "Free for all veterans".

I really don't see anything to debate, the program/licenses are completely voluntary? you can participate in the program or simply pay for a license.

Not sure where you're getting at, my comment about not starting a debate on who should be classified as a Vet and was a response to Duncan's post (which I quoted) saying that "Doesn't seem right that a person who completes minimal training, then releases from the CF, reg or res, and becomes classified as a Veteran."

Also, ref this:

So you're saying that serving in the military has no value? that's its just another "job"?

The military IS just a job and has no additional value in comparison to other jobs. It's not the only line of work where you or your family has to make sacrifices. The whole thing about unlimited liability is quite unique in Canada, sure, but at the end of the day, it doesn't put CAF members on a higher pedestal.

It's just a job like the long haul truck driver, Uber driver, and family doctor, all filled with personal risks and sacrifices, I see it now, Thanks

Geez guys never look a gift horse in the mouth. It's something. I thought it was a good gesture. Lot's of vets here in SK, a Lot. While I agree it should include those currently serving it's more than I've read of any other province doing.

Son did the paperwork, all he has to pay for is draws.

Apply for and get a Veterans Card then you can call yourself one because the DND has designated you as such. And you need to be honorably discharged to get it.

I'm not seeing a problem here.
Hasn't a veteran always been a retired member of the armed forces?
Many Saskatchewan veterans didn't want free licences.
It's a political feel good move.

Perhaps in the context of government departments concerned with former service personnel, especially since WWI and WWII drew a lot of people into the military who would not have made it their profession, but as a matter of common usage, it means someone who has been in service for and unspecified length of time that most people would think significant. Most people would not think just getting through basic training and then leaving the service would make you a veteran.
