I want to buy a ruger old army revolver for fun.

Someday I want to try CASS shooting.

1) What class would the old army compete in?

2) Do I need the fixed sight model? This seems harder to find.

SASS has changed the rules to include fixed and adjustable sites together.
(Not much if any advantage when targets are 7 yards or so)
You would have to shoot all 4 of your guns in black Powder
to be in Frontier Cartridge class. If you shoot a mix,
most likely Cowboy class depending on your age.
I myself shoot a mix, to keep it more fun and interesting.
I started out for 4 years with 2 cap-n-ball pistols,
now use 2 1873's in .45LC.
Some match's are BP some are smokeless (trail boss)
Same for my .44 mag rifle.
So far only factory for 12 gauge.
If you are new to shooting , and Cowboy,
start out simple so you are not confronted
with imformation overload in the beginning.
ie: learning BP loading and the rules of the SASS game at same time.

try www.sassnet.com for all the rules and imfo

Page 18 here fixed site BP revolvers for frontier class shooting.
And the other guns must be BP too.

Looks like adjustable site BP revolvers can be used in other catagories.
Do I have this figured right?

Just asking cause I have been watching gun broker for the old army auctions.
There are lots less fixed site models and they sell for lots more $$$.

A pair of fixed site, unfired, non consecutive #ed, sold this month for just under $2100.

Not new to shooting. In fact on my 2nd 5lb jug of trail boss.:p

You can shoot whatever pistol you want in the "age-based" categories; smokeless or BP, fixed or adjustable sight, cartridge or cap & ball.

All the other categories require fixed-sight revolvers.
