Just a question for those that have used KG Gun Kote... First attempt at it today for me. Prep was done just as recommended.... Blasted in my cabinet with 120 Aluminum oxide, de-greased and sprayed with Satain Black gun kote. The three rifles I did came out beautiful after baking but I feel it is too glossy. Final coat may have been too heavy? It was baked at 325deg for just over an hr. Can the sheen be knocked down at all without a complete re-do? I could live with the gloss but much prefer a more matt finish....

When it does that for me, it's because it's too thick a coat. Another thing that helps me with it, is preheating warmer than suggested - go easy, use more light passes. Satin gunkote and me have had more than one battle.....

Yes those do look fairly glossy. (But from what can be seen in the pic, looks like you did a nice job) When I use Satin, it ends up pretty much half way between matte and gloss (similar to the lower bolt shroud in your pic) - but it will quickly go gloss when I apply it a bit too thick.

like double gun says, too thick of a coat. you can try some 0000steel wool with a light buff to rub down some of the sheen. it generally works okay to remove shiny runs or thick spots that sometimes happen if the spray gun does some splatter. I prefer the matte finishes myself as they seem to be more consistent. i have had different parts all sprayed the same but the way the metal takes the heat will end up with slightly different results between pieces.
So after work today I did a little light buffing with 0000 steel wool on bottom of one of the 35 Whelens and wow..... The finish now looks Satain like it should. A light rub to the entire gun and now looks fantastic. That gun kote is tough stuff and does not show any steel wool marks. Thanks for all the help.... I will be up all night buffing these parts, but I guess it really does serve me right for doing 3 guns on my first go!!! To learn one must be punished I guess! Will re-post pics when done.
Looks way better. Middle pictured bolt shroud was not coated, aftermarket.... May look a little glossy from the lighting but rifles look great... Thanks again for the tips for next round and steel wool tip.... These were just practice rifles anyway. One is a 35 Whelen with stainless Benchmark barrel, the shorty is a shortened CDL 35 Whelen and the other is a 280 rem, stainless take off barrel... Just to get rid of some 270's I had kicking around......
