Since my last three outings were a bust. It was just a matter of time...
Made it for first light to a farm that called me to take down the yotes that took all their cats awhile back.
Walked in to see nothing hangin around, so I decided to just sit and hang for a hour or two since it was going to be alittle windy for the morning and this place had lots of trees so it wasnt that bad here. I hung out on some dirt pile that gives me a nice view in every direction. After about 45 minutes I decided to move over to that bales to get a different view of things. Still nothing moving about. About a half hour or so I hear a few coyotes a good km down the valley start their morning howling, not a few seconds later a lone coyote about 350yds from me in some trees and behind a small hill howled back. I was on the wrong side of the bales so I started to move over to get a better view. I figured he would pop out in one of two spots but after 5-10 minutes, nothing was showing up. I pulled one of my Carver calls and gave him a little howl and waited. I know coyotes like to get down wind of you but I didnt think it would walk right through the farm yard and abunch of cow/calves to get down wind of me... Still lookin towards where I think he would pop out I hear the cows making some really weird sounds. Look over towards them and I see a coyote snapping at a REALLY young calf. Kind of like when a dog is trying to bite you, he lunges forward and snaps and then takes a step back. Kind of something like that... So in what seemed like a minute, but only took a matter of 3 or 4 seconds. I remember thinking do I shoot through the cattle... was there anything behind the yote... and can I hit that moving coyote... I remember saying yep yep yep out loud to myself. lol I guesstimated it was just over 100yds so it wasnt to bad of a shot. Pulled the trigger and hear that great pop of the round hitting the coyote. It fell right there, but after a second it got back up and hobbled over to the fence where the fence has fallin over and crawled under it to hide. I cant take another shot as theres cows right behind it, so I watch it for a few seconds. I was thinking to myself that I had a good chest shot on it, but it was bleeding pretty good like I gave it a Texas hart shot. I decided I was going to walk over there and put it out of its misery, but as soon as I start walkin it moves out from under the fence and trys to make it over to the bush line. Just my luck. He was always behind something so I couldnt put another one into it. He makes it to the bush so now I have to follow the blood trail, which aint hard. heh I find him not to far into the bush hiding under a pile of dead branches. Lets just say he had a eye popping experience.
This was from my shooting position. He was inbetween the fence and manure pile in the center of this pic.
This is where he crawled over to and hid for awhile
And the prize, the "attempted" calf killer
Oh yeah I found out that my first shot went through one of his front legs first.
After all that I was back in the truck and off to one of my farmers places I get to shoot on.
Pulled into his yard stopped had some coffee a couple timbits and I started my walk over the a bait pile this farmer set you for us. Not more then 25yds from the truck I have to jump over a barbed wire fence. While doing this I look over in the field and I see this coyote with its afterburners on coming my direction. I hear a tractor on the other side of the yard, so he must of scared it right into my lap. Im thinking wow this is going to be easy. As its runs just on the other side of this hill I was on, I run up the other side of it and pull out the bipod legs and lay down, just as I do this it spots me and stops for a look. I wasnt quite ready for the shot so it starts a slow run of. I lead it and as it comes into my crosshairs (again just over 100yds) I squeeze off a round and like this morning the pop sound echos back to me, but for some reason I mainly think since my last three times going out with no fur on the ground I unload all 4 rounds into him. rigger time is good, right???
Again, my shooting position. Hes laying pretty much dead center of the pic at the edge of the snow.
And the prize. This was also his route he ran from
The only bad thing with this was... if you look in the pic of my shooting position and look past where this coyote was laying. You can see the small group of trees there? Well thats the bait pile, so now if there was anything there, it wont be now. lol oh well. Fur on the ground is better a chance of putting fur on the ground.
This is also the same bait pile as those two different packs were going to fight each other over and... one of my hunting partners called a female in off of it. We took a few dogs down around here , but they seem to keep coming back. I guess thats a good thing for me.
Anyways I continued on like there might be something at the bait pile anyways. Got there and there was nothing hanging out. Decided to lay out here for awhile to see if anything pops up because I know theres two dens close by. Hung out for maybe a hours and nothing showed its self. Just as I thinking of moving over to this other little valley not far away. I heard someone up the valley start shooting like nobodys business. You can tell its a bigger cal rifle for sure and not no 223 or anything like that. So I start thinking about it and I know up the valley a ways where I dont have permission to go on, YET. Is a farm that might not have anyone living there as I found out. ANyways I know theres a few yotes down there because Ive heard them howling a few times now. so Im thinking maybe someone has found this pack of dogs and its taking them down now. I know when I start shooting the pack halls azz in any direction so Im thinking that just maybe this guys will push em right to me. I cant be that lucky can I? Well after siting for a few and nothing coming my direction I decided to head over to the other valley and see if bump one of these guys that live in there. I start walking over there and as I getting close I see a coyote come running of the hill about 200yds away. He sees me and buns off any from me. I let him go without shooting because I didnt want to scare anything in this little valley and didnt think I had a good chance of hitting him.
I crawl up to the valleys edge and lay out glassing for a little bit. After awhile I start to think maybe that guy that was blasting away earlier scared these dogs off too. I decided to pull out one of my hand callers again and give alil howl, since I think Ive been getting lucky with it today. Im not that good with hand calls yet, but Im trying.
Anyways I give a little howl and scan the area. What do you know.... Up pops a head of a coyote on a small hill for a look see. I had my range find out and hes 260-261 down 9 degrees. I think to myself ahh F*%$ because for some reason all year theres been some crazy voodoo stuff going on in the 270 range for me. Always miss!!! I had plenty of time because I think I woke this guy up and had a good feeling that he wasnt going anywhere soon. Got all my range worked out and relaxed pretty good for this shot and this guys was letting me. sucka lol With a nice squeeze of the trigger, oh and btw I can only see his head, neck and part of his upper shoulders. Well... redemption is all I gotta say on this guy. I dropped him right where he was sittin without a twitch. I was one happy camper at this point because, one I finally hit something in this little voodoo range for me and second thing is Ive got three dogs down by 12 oclock. I have to walk around to get to this guy and then down through some snow.
My shooting position. Hes down from that big hill near the top of the little valley in the center of the pic.
You can see in this pic that its sitting in alittle bowl about 1' beep. Thats kind of why I guess it was abit hidden from me.
The prize with rifle pic. I actually think its still got some nice fur going on.
Well back to the truck, had some more coffee/doughnuts and off to the next farm down the valley that actually had a wolf at his farm all the time, trying to lure the family dog out of the yard a awhile. I tried finding it but everytime I came around he wouldnt show up. arg
Well I walked up the ridge and didnt the routine of the day with hangin out and glassing around. Took a few dogs out of this area to this year, so I know there some around. Maybe after a half hour I see one mousing in the field approx 1200yds out. I didnt even bring the ecaller with me this time because Im getting pretty lucky with the hand calls today. Out it came for a nice long howl. Remember Im not that good with these hand calls yet, but what do you know its my lucky day. It stops and looks my direction and starts walking in my direction. lol I couldnt believe it. Ive tried alot during this winter with hand calls and never get lucky calling anything in with em. Must be getting alittle better. This dog is still kind of mousing the field but hes coming in my direction still. While hes taking his time and me switching between howls and distress sounds, Im using my range finder and making alittle range card up in my head so that I know how far I have to pull him in to. At this time its getting close to 3 oclock and I have to be out of here by 3:30 because I have to header back to the first farm I was at this morning cause from coming out to this farm so much I kind of figured out some of the local coyote routines and I know that shortly after 4 oclock theres a pair of yotes coming back to their dening area from a days scavenging around for food. Well anyways I finally got this other guys pulled in to 400yds away. I wasnt 100 percent on shooting it at that range but I was running out of time to make it back to that other farm. I took a shot a 410 and missed. The afterburners were on and he was gone. Humped it back to the truck and tore off to the other farm.
I had to do a little off roading to get into this area. Grabbed all my stuff and got to the place I wanted to in time. Set up my ecaller this time because I wanted both of these yotes Ive seen walking through this area. As I was layed out glassin the area I see them come from a bunch of times, I hear a whole #### load of gunfire coming from the opposite side of the valley. WTF now I these coyotes aint coming because Im sure theyre long gone by now. I pull out my monocular and start glassing the valley. Sure enough I see a white truck parked right on top of the hill exposed. Start looking across the top of the valley and sure enough I see two guys standing up blasting away at something down in the valley. Im pretty sure they didnt have a sniff at what they were doing either, they reminded my of some frickin hillbillies. Oh yeah and did I say this is on private property that I have permission to hunt on, which Im sure they screwed me over on. lol oh well. SO I thought I would have some fun with them. I pulled out my hand caller and gave a loud long howl and took a look though my monocular to see what they were doing. I couldnt really tell but it looked like they looked my direction. I decided next to fire up my hellfire really loud which echoed down the valley. The wind was the wrong direction for me but it sounded like they howled back, then right after they howled a real pack of yotes across the valley from me started howling, than a pack of coyotes on my side of the valley not more the about 400-500 from me started howling too. lol Those guys got my attention, so I grabbed my caller and moved closer one hill because it looked like it had a better view that direction. I forgot about the guys across the valley for abit and tried to cash in on acouple of yotes near me. I tried calling those yotes back but never got anything from them. I tried everything but nothing was working. Im thinking they might of seen me move earlier and took off. oh well its like 4:30 now so I started back towards my truck. I looked across the valley again but the truck was gone. I hear a few more guns shots from across the valley and I dont know what the heck these guys were shooting at because Im sure there wasnt anything around em by now. As I was walking the edge of this valley to get around some trees so I could get to the top to my truck, I saw that white truck coming down the valley towards my side real slow. I started to run because I got this crazy idea in my head. lol I wanted to get behind this big rock that was 300 yards from the road they were driving on and watch em. what I was planing was to howl when they were right across from me and just f%$# with em for awhile. I was watching them with my monocular as they were slowly getting closer. As they were almost right across from me I started to howl, lol they instantly stopped and the passenger rolled his window down lookin like a crazy hillbilly. lol I did another little howl and glassed em. They just sat there looking. lol I made sure that no guns were pointed out the window, I stood up and started yelling throwing my hands up in the air asking WTF they were doing.... They just sat there for a second or 2 and then took off up the road. Im kicking myself in the azz now because I should of video taped this, just never thought of this until later. By the time I got to my truck and out to the road they were long gone. I tried going that way home to see if I could fine em, but didnt see that truck again. So........ for the guys driving the white newer dodge truck. WTF were you guys doing???
Till next time. cheers
