I was at a local gunshow and a nice little shotgun caught my eye. It was a J.P. Sauer and Sons 16 gauge boxlock. It was rather plain with some basic engraving and scroll work, case hardened , not scalloped with cocking indicators. The gun was in very good to excellent condition, the owner was asking $650.00, is this a fair price? I got his card and am thinking it over. I'm trying to research it but there doesn't seem to be much info out there.

Sounds like a fair price on a great gun in a sweet gauge PROVIDED:

- it's chambered for 2 3/4" shells (J.P. Sauer has been making good boxlocks for quite some time. It could easily be an older model 2 1/2" in good condition.)
-it locks up tight, exhibits no rust or pitting, or serious cracks in either stock.

If you go to see it again, take the forestock off and open the action. Take the barrels and hang them off your finger by the hook. With your free hand flick the barrels to make them ring like a bell. If there are cracks in the solder or the rib is coming loose, you'll hear buzzing rather than nice clean ringing.

If the barrels are in good shape, the wood is original and in decent condition, and it's chambered for 2 3/4, it's a fair price. If it's in immaculate condition, it's a steal.

Seems a good deal provided the proper "attributes" as already mentioned above are present.

Chokes are likely gonna be fixed F/M and you may wish to open those up......take into consideration aprox $60 each bbl (don't believe those would be chrome lined)

I sent an email to confirm its 2 3/4". The action locked up tight, the bores were bright and shiny, the only flaw on the gun was the butt plate was not perfectly lined up with the stock, it looks original. I think maybe someone had put a recoil pad on, then taken it off again but didn't line up the butt pad correctly, I'll post pictures if I buy it.
