Sauer 303

Sauer does strange things to their goodies. I have several Sauer 202 mags that actually fit an Austrian Voere rifle, by accident or design. Model 2185 half stock rifle, of 1993 manufacture.
I have one 3 round Sauer 202 magazine ( I guess later manufacture?) for 30-06, and it is too wide for the Voere rifle magazine well.
But I have one older Sauer 202 three round mag, fits the Voere perfectly, and two 5 round 202 mags that work in the Voere as well.

Do your homework friend.

I have a target grade, left hand Sauer 202 from 1999. Fit and finish perfect. Butter smooth action, accurate. In my opinion it's a safe bet the company wouldn't release a gun that didn't meet its standards.

I'm not worried about mags not fitting in a current production rifle

I have a 202 as well, they are discontinued now.

Specifically looking for input from someone who has owned or spent some time with the 303 model

I molested a used 303 Coralaines had at a gun show last year... I believe it was in 300WM...
Any Sauer rifle is kinda rare in Canada the 303's hold unicorn status in my eyes.

Love my 202 tho!

Had the chance to use the Sauer 303 Black Velvet in .300WM a few years ago. Absolute dream rifle, wish I still had it, if I snag another one I would not let it go. Smoothest shooting magnum I have ever handled, hands down.
Cycling it felt like a small bore rifle on the shoulder, managed to snag a few animals with her. It was topped with a Schmidt so I was extra spoiled. :)

thanks for the reply, looking at the Hardwood in 9.3x62 and putting the new Zeiss V8 Diavari on it with the Integral rail, just waiting on pricing with the options I selected

I have a synthetic 303 in 9.3x62.
T is a really nice rifle.

Very accurate, easy to clean, great trigger, very safe, compact, balances well.

Really I have no complaints.

303 can be nice... if you are shooting once a year a box of ammo and for your styling goes before anything else.

If you are more... demanding shooter, you might find 303 to be... lacking.

1) Very complex with minimal disassembly available. This is an official cleaning video,

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g6IK_MYvdDQ

you can't really take anything apart more than that. Well you can, but there are bunch of small bits and springs and you'll never get it back. Sauer says "dont, and we won't tell you how anyway".

2) This is not the best most reliable semi auto. Far from it. You can get FTF, FTE any time depending on you chambering and bullet profile you might like.

3) Some 303s have gas leaking from the gas port. In some cases it blows back on the optic and stain the front lens.

And it is expensive and no one has any experience dealing with it. But MDC, the distributor, will take care of you, just time is not always an infinite resource.

You can take the barrel off with 2 Allen screws. Very easy. But the rest is more difficult and I have never done itZ the video definitely is not the complete takedown. The manual has the complete takedown.

To me, it is an excellent hunting rifle and a mediocre regular shooter due to the things that owlowl mentioned

Ammunition obviously plays a big role in how a semi auto functions. A video of a guy with a zip lock bag full of bullets does not inspire confidence.

If the videos were in English and the cause was found other than what appears to be videos just showing a failure without explanation is kind of useless. I can do the same with questionable ammo in my ACR, SL8, etc

A FNAR or browning BAR is not nice to disassemble either

OwlOwl and python 125, either of you own the 303 or spent significant time behind one as a hunting rifle?

No, I was really considering it one time so I did a bit of research. I really like the look and feel, no doubt. But overall it does not appeal to me.

All being said, I just personally can't figure out why would I take 303 over 202 or 404, not a single one. 3 shot semi auto seems silly compared to the all the "negatives" I see in it.

I'm biased for sure, but the way I see it, if I were to take semi auto hunting, I want to have reliable function with ANY ammo I might buy or reload with any bullet I want, and I don't want a rifle which cannot get wet out of fear that I won't get the all the springs back together if I need to take it apart.

For a range time it is too pretty, too costly and too... civilian to enjoy any action sport with it. No aftermarket, no nothing.

I've shot and handled a few that other hunters had. I don't recall any of them mentioning or having issues.

They are nice rifles, primarily aimed at those that do drive hunts and I imagine they sell 90% of them in Scandinavian countries. I'm not a fan of semi-auto's as a hunting rifle, just personal preference, too many parts to clean and get rusty/dirty and I don't do drive hunts with dogs.
But if you're looking for a semi auto hunting rifle, you'd probably be hard pressed to find a nicer one. I've never been a fan of BAR's, they feel clunky and dated.

FYI,there are 5 round mags available.

They are nice to handle, that's for sure. First time I picked up one I didn't even understand it was semi, felt like 202 bolt with slim lines and all.

They make extended mags with 5rnd capacity, just like with the 202 and 404 there is a number of Sauer videos on YouTube showing this as well

I have a 202, they are no longer made.

i have a couple of older Belgium made BAR's in 7mm mag, I agree they feel clunky and dated

Have one Classic 303 in 9.3x62 with. Swaro z6i 1.7-10x42 with rail mount. It shoots 3/4 inch groups at 100 m with 286 grain partitions hand loads. Awesome semi auto
