So, before all you picture hounds start baying,
I'll add it once I get the 35mm film developed, so be patient!!!
Decided to take a trip into the BC Peace river country. [4 hours from here]
Am allowed any Whitetail Buck & One Muley Buck with 3+ points on one side.
Morning of first day, we saw a few does and a couple of spike and forkhorn muleys.
Afternoon, we were checking out some alfalfa and spotted two muleys laying down across the field.
Spotting scope showed one 3 point buck [6 pointer to you eastern folk] and a doe.
Leica rangefinder of my partner says 560 yards....a bit too far.
Deer are spooky, and are now standing.
We put the sneak on, a roundabout way, till we are a bit closer.
Recheck distance....340 yards. No chance to get closer, open field between us and the deer. I tell J. "340 is just fine!"
Get down and comfortable, settled the crosshairs just into hair at the top of his chest, [noting a headwind of perhaps 20 kmh]
Dropped the hammer..........deer folds up on the spot he was standing, dead right there. [High Lung shot]
Congrats all round, my partner and his son are amazed at the quick kill, particularly with such a tiny looking cartridge.
The rifle?...a heavily modified M600 Remington with a Shilen pencil barrel that weighs 5lbs 11 oz with the Leupold 3x9 Ultralight on it.
The chambering? 6mm BR, shooting the 90 grain Swift Scirocco chased by 30.5grains of Varget, ignited by a CCI 450 primer.
Beautiful young buck, fat, no neck swelling, no smell. Perfect deer for the table.
Hunted hard the next day to try to find a Whitey, but no go this time.
Maybe later :)
Regards, Eagleye.
