I've come across a 99 takedown in 22 high power. The receiver is a gray rat and it has the tang crack. The guy wants $400 is this worth it?Maddog I'd value your opinion as I know you have big interest and knowledge in the 99 savage.

I had the chance to take a 99 in 300 savage, for under $300 it too needed work but only cosmetics. I think that's a fair bit, what's the availablity of ammo like for that calibre?? Cracked stock?? how bad do you need this gun

I think the only reason a person would purchase a 22 high power these days would be to fill a hole in a collection.

Therefore a "gray rat" (24 hr campfire term) with a cracked stock doesn't sound like much of a collectable rifle. The $400.00 on the other hand would suggest that the current owner thinks it has some collectable value in it.

I have seen them at a few gun shows and the $375.00 - $425.00 is always where they are listed but seldom do you see anyone walk out with them.

Collectors will wait for a better one and general public will wait for a cheaper one. ;)

Like was asked of you earlier....."just how bad do you need this rifle"?

Hornhunter nailed it.

Only thing I've got to say that he hasn't is that some 22 H.P.'s are worth more than the others.

Most of the 22H.P.'s you see at the shows and up for sale are all model 1899H's and F's, some with issues, some without. Now if you find a model 99EG in 22 H.P. then you're looking at some money, actually any 22 H.P. with a solid frame is gonna run you $400 and up. Just keep your eyes out for a decent shooter. I noticed P&S had a 22 H.P. on the site for quite some time now, the barrels been bobbed but it would make a great shooter at a decent price, plus the tang sight comes with it so it makes it an even better deal.

thanks for the replies, looks like I'll let this one slide.

Good call.

The nice thing about Canada right now is that the Savage rage hasn't hit and probably won't hit as hard as the U.S. prices have gone.

They're paying absolutely stupid prices (seen it time and time again) on friggan grey rats that wouldn't bring $300 up here.

Prices are going up here too Joe, especially the clip loaders--big hunter demand. Rotary mag stuff doesn't seem to sell quite as well unless it is in the hands of some of the out to lunch dealer crowd.

Hey, if you guys don't want to keep those gawd awful rotary magazine models up there, feel free to send them to me, I'll give them a good home. I have a 284, wouldn't mind the22-250 or a 7mm-08 though. Les

Theres still not one gun I can't find up here that I'll pay 1/2 price to 3/4 less than what you guys are paying down there.

Don't make me prove it Les.;)

Bring all your rifles and move on up here. Not a big problem to import. Our new SUPPORTIVE federal government is now on OUR side. Hunters and shooters always welcome in Canada. Our previous government seemed to prefer criminals and terrorists, happily those days are over. I agree on the .303 Savage comment, I love my 99H with cast loads. After re-reading your post I understand that some of your rifles are likely taboo up here. (black guns full autos etc.) I would like to own some of those too but the good hunting and unspoiled enviroment here makes up for having only sporting rifles. I have a buddy from PA who is moving here when he retires from the USMC. (24 years in, now a Gunny. It is funny how he thinks every civillian is a buck private) I will cure him of that soon enough. (I have 25 years with the OPP (Ontario Provincial Police) and have Sergeant rank.) Together we should be unbearable.
take care, Darryl

Actually, no black guns, but I do have a nice mini in the 181 serial range, damn fine shooter. Trick is waiting for the wife to get out of the Army now. I would like to live in NWT, but somehow I don't think that would fly very well with her. Les

I have a couple .300 savages (99s)and factory ammo is not too hard to find. Most Canadian Tire stores in Alberta carry a few boxes of Federal 150s and 180s. I have seen Rem. ammo as well. It is not too dificult to hand load for the .300sav. eather.

Here is my .300 and a case for a high capacity magazine. It took me all 6 shots to put both these called in wolves on the ground.
