Hey guys, went and checked out thr remington 700sps, savage 10 fcp with the Mcmillan stock, and remington xcr. Gotta say, i'm likeing the Savage. The stock has a great feel (although it seems pretty flexible in the front) Trigger is crisp, no creep, its a shorter barrel than I'm used to, but it must work or they wouldn't put it together. I was kinde hopeing to get a horus vision scope, but seen a Zeiss Conquest 6.5-20x50 with the rapid-z reticle. What do you think of this combination?

How long of a barrel are you use to? McMillan stocks are plenty stiff. I have never been a fan of the Ziess rapid Z. I prefer a mildot reticle.
What kind of shooting will you be doing? That might help us answer you. For target shooting, you want your reticule to be as fine as possible. Do you need rangefinding? Holdovers?
p.s. the 10FCP is great, my shooting buddy has it and I use it all the time, great accuracy and doesn't hurt the wallet either.

Awesome rifle, once you go Savage you wont go back to anything else (at least I haven't), you should find it to be very accurate. Accutrigger is awesome and can be tuned very easily (I shorten all my springs to make the trigger even lighter from the min factory setting)...For a long range scope I only recommend Sightron. SIII's can be had for under a grand and the optics and adjustments surpass anything that Nightforce or Leupold can offer (and at almost twice the price!). The SII Big Sky scopes are just as good. I have zero experience with Zeiss so I can't comment on them.

For the time being it will be used primarily for target shooting, I would like to get back into form, and maybe push the ranges to 800-1000 yards possibly. If it apeals to me, maybe some competition, I hear you guys talking about F class, and it has my interest. I would prefer the scope to have range finding properties, yes, and am not against a mildot scope, but like the look of the Horus vision retical, as well as the rapid-z from Zeiss.
I'm all ears, and will consider all options, so fire away...c:
What's the thickness of the Rapid-Z reticule at the distances you want to shoot? For instance, the lines of the reticule I have now cover 3.5mm@100m. My previous reticule covered 6.5mm@100m, which meant 13mm at 200m, so shooting very small targets e.g. shotgun casings, was somewhat annoying as the reticule would almost completely cover them up.
I imagine the same will be the case for F-class targets that are far, far away. So if I were you, I'd pick up something in the 2nd focal plane with a fine crosshair reticule and appropriate magnification for the distance you will shoot if you wanna stick to mainly target shooting.
Someone has a good sig line here that says "aim small, miss small" and a fine reticule will help you do that. The Horus and the Rapid-Z seem to be for quick holdovers without the need to adjust your elev./windage... Seems more like a hunting/tactical purpose, if you ask me, but some of the more savvy folks here could enlighten you.

Those dimensions I havn't looked up. For long range precision shooting, what is prefered first or second focal plane? Also, how big a PITA is calculating range if the retical magnification does not change through the various levels of magnifaction for example, mil measurement @ say 6.5 magni. compared to 20 magni.?
