Hey CGN,

Putting together a Savage 10 in .308.

Friend of mine has one and i got a chance to put some time in behind it, super happy with the way it shoots and how the rifle handles.

My question for everyone is:

Whats the best scope to pair with it so i do not break the bank? and what kind of muzzle break should i throw on it?

I am a Vortex fan but open minded to just about anything as long as its a proven platform.

Dan

Hard to beat the Vortex PST Gen 2 for value and features.
We have sold thousands of our AR10 brakes that have gone onto these rifles. Our brakes keep the muzzle lift to a minimum allowing you to spot your own shots.

Hi Dan
Currently running a 10TR build.
What’s cool is the ability to change barrels yourself, well worth it.

In its early stages, i was running factory stock, insite arms heathens 5/8x24 brake, ATRS 20moa rail, and vortex razor gen ll (had pre ordered pst gen 2 but my pre order got messed up so i forked out more $$$).

Later i installed an ESS chassis.

And this year, an IBI barrel with a rifle basix trigger.

Will you be reloading for it?

What is your optics budget?

I can offer and use Sightron, Athlon and Delta... great features and less expensive then peer optics.

All sorts of goodies to help you set up that Savage as well... and yes, I have brakes

PM or email.

Thanks

Jerry

Another vote for the Vortex PST gen 2, Pretty good glass for the money, great reticle, better turrets.
Burris XTR 2, has a bit more elevation
Bushnell Tactical Elite, a little cheaper but still bright and the G2 and G3 reticles are nice in my opinion. Or the DMR 2 is a bit nicer.
I'm also liking the Delta 4.5-30 but that's a bit more $.
Really depends on what you want to spend.

As far as a brake, find one that you like the like the look of and decide if you want something minimal or something obscene. I like the Precision Armament M11.

MDT has new brakes out that are good and easy to install/time. I'm running a Vortex Viper PST Gen I, the Gen II is a worthwhile upgrade. How much money are looking to spend?

What distance do you intend to shoot? Just curious.

I have customized my 10 tr to the point where the only OEM part on it is the action. If I was to start over I would use a rem 700 platform with a remage barrel and barrel nut, that way I get all the aftermarket options of the 700 and also have the savage barrel interchangeability. I recently upgraded to an IOR recon with a sphur QD mount, expensive but I use it on my other rifles as well. I used to run a very cheap but well made SWFA fixed 16X in badger ordonnance rings and Ferrell mount. It performed quite well, I know SWFA may be hard to come by in Canada (not sure if still the case) but I find it hard to beat for the price.

I too have a 10TR where the only original parts are bolt and receiver.
To start over i wouldn’t change a thing.
I had considered rem with remage barrel, you still probably need a smith to true the bolt to the receiver.
Savage free floating bolt head was a process to cheap out, but brought many documented benefits.

Hey Jerry, can you still source CDI DBM for the low bolt savage short action like the 10TR?

Maybe if you want to keep the OEM receiver...perhaps not if you go with the defiance action for example?

If you can find one, the Leupold VX2 6-18x40 AO with fine duplex reticle is a good scope for the money. It'll probably be a used one, Leupold has discontinued the VX2 line. I have one on my Savage 10T-SR and it works well. Lifetime warranty through Korth in Alberta, no receipt required. If there's any doubt about being the second (or fifth) owner and still having warranty, call them before you buy used and ask that question. Good folks to deal with, and quick service.

UPDATE

Ok so Cabelas had an amazing deal!

Savage 10T-SR for $649

Picked it up with a Vortex® Diamondback Tactical FFP 6-24.

Should be a nice package and a nice rifle to shoot. Anyone have any advice on rings? Plan is to shoot some competitions and courses, shoot and get better.

I doubt you'll be disappointed with that rifle. I recently bought the same in 6.5 Creedmoor. Despite hot and cold online reviews I've been quite happy with mine. A good shooting, comfortable rifle. I added a couple pounds of lead in the butt stock to improve balance and further reduce recoil.
Ejection is a bit lazy, I can't comment on how well it feeds from the mag since I single load.
I think it's one of the best options to get started in full bore target shooting. Accurate and doesn't break the bank doing it.

SWFA offers shipping and export to Canada. I've heard good things about their 10x42 fixed power scopes.

I imported two fixed 10x SWFA scopes one for myself and for a friend. All said and done it was under 900 to my door(give or take). The glass is crystal clear, havnt had it long enough for a proper review but for the price Im happy. Threw it on my 10TR with some vortex rings.
