so im looking at getting into a target rifle. was looking @ a savage 10fp in .308 is this a good starter target rifle? i have no plans for mods reason being i would like to hunt with it as well.
thanx

I wouldn't hunt with it, just because of the weight and the balence but by all means you can hunt with it. Most people will agree that it will be pretty darn accurate right out of the box. Personally the fit and finish on Savage rifles is just to poor for me. I know it should be function over looks but I draw the line with those el cheapo plastic stocks. Even the sps stocks feel quite a bit better. If you don't want to mod the rifle than the Savage is probably the best bet. If you want to fiddle with the thing get a heavy barreled Remington.

naw my mod gun is going to be my 10/22 target. the 10fp seams to fit me good. i did like the remington sps stock but the action felt sloppy.

I've been using my 10fp (10FPLE1A) deer hunting these past 2 seasons. Love it. Definitely a blind/ sit & wait rifle though. Extremely accurate, great trigger. It will shoot sub MOA no prob.

The lil lady likes it too. :D

good buy as in price? Yes..... Good for hunting? You couldn't pay me to carry it around.

Let me tell you a story of a bear hunt, blah blah blah....and after one of the guys I'm with shoots the bear, but bear keeps moving we go on a blood trail, and now from the blind I have to carry my 10fp......and after 20-25 mins of walking we find who we were looking for, but now a trip back....to say I was tired would be an understatement, we were walking through some thick wood...

May I suggest a Tikka T3, I carried one of thos on a hunt, that was a breeze with 20" barrel

ps. I LOVE my 10FP, would not trade it.....unless someone has Barrett to tarde

I really enjoy Savages and think they are the best rig for the money spent. However, I would go with the det mag version vs the blind mag. Way easier in the field.

also, BED that action in the stock. Otherwise, you will not realise the level of accuracy the rig can give you.

I can even offer timing work on the bolt which transforms its operational ease and smoothness.

With a bit of TLC, it will run with some pretty expensive rigs.

Jerry

PS Ruthless, I really don't think you will be parting with your NEW FP anytime soon.

Check my thread in the "Gunsmithing" section of CGN. Mine's a royal POS, and if you dig around on Google-links, the QA at Savage is falling off a cliff.

I'd avoid it. Also, it's very front-heavy, it was designed to balance on a bipod.

I love mine shoots great but humping it around in the bush? Just don't get the 26" pipe mine weighs a ton. I think they might make a 20". The stock sucks but you can change that at a later date If you wan't a real tac driver.

I had a 110FP in 7mmRemMag, was my starter gun (alongside a .223) for learning the long range game plus reloading. I bedded it, and hogged out the barrel channel, and it shot .75 MOA all day long and sometimes a bit better. I went on to more expensive guns, and though they look and feel better, they really don't shoot much better

I own one (well, the 10-FLCP - same thing but with a muzzlebrake) . The listed weight from Savage is dead wrong. It almost borders on false advertising (actually, this applies to most all of Savage's guns nowadays, all the talk on the SA forums).

Be forewarned, carrying a brick is more pleasant than shouldering this thing. It is a very ###y gun, but it's ridiculously front-heavy - of course, it's the "police" model designed to be balanced on a bipod (which it does so perfectly).

Loaded up with the optics, the pod, and rails, I must be pushing close to nineteen pounds. Lose the bipod, and it's still overweight at sixteen-and-some.

As a hole-puncher/zombie-eliminator/hostile-sniper, it's a fantastic rifle. However, if you plan on going hunting, you better pack something else, unless you plan on being stationary all day.

im not too worried about packing a heavy gun around! my enfield is very heavy! scope and a bipod are the only things that will live on that gun. anywho i hunt deer for 10 days a year and elk for a the same. the only thing i realy care about is how it shoots from 100 - 600+ yrds not how much it you think its a brick!
