I'm thinking of purchasing a Savage 10FP in either the 26" with McMillan stock or the 24" with the HS Precision.

I'd appreciate any options, advice, experience anybody has with either rifle and the pros/cons of either stock or barrel length.

Thank,

Scott

McMillan... with the 26" barrel.... ;)

If this shoots anything like the Model 10 FP LE with the 20" barrel you will be a very happy man... :D

Of course it will shoot - it's a Savage....

Question for those recommending the McMillan over the HS....

Why the McMillan? Is it the longer barrel or is the stock better? I prefer the looks of the HS, but I've never shot either so I'm curious if there are any downfalls to it.

I've personally handled both a McMillan A1 and an HS Precision, and I like the HS Precision far better. Get the one you prefer more. Of course, the McMillan is probably worth more.

The rifles in question in this thread do not have the stocks that you speak of Rohann. The Savages have the A2 McMillan and the new HS tactical style stock, not an A1 or 700P stock. The McMillan A2, in my opinon is a better feeling stock.

The McMillan was the only alternative to the Choate or Savage stock when I bought mine. It's light years ahead of either of the others in terms of construction and feel. I'd still go with the McMillan just because I've had good experience with them and they have a solid reputation from both shooters and builders.

Steve: Oh ok, didn't know that. Never handled an A2 before, and never a new tactical style stock either.
The new HS looks a bit strange; it looks like they're starting to take after McMillan.

After having handled both rifles, I now find that the HS is more to my liking. It'll also save me a couple hundred bucks too!

FYI... Wholesale Sports in Calgary has a couple of the McMillans in for $999.00 each - that seems like a decent price.

they're both good however:
