Just looking for some info on these. How’s it stack up as for a lower priced option to get started playing at long range? I don’t have much Savage experience except for a old 22-250 Model 112 heavy barrel in the back of my safe. Cheap stock, not great fit/finish, and it feeds like crap, but it shoots tiny little groups with almost everything I’ve put through it.

My original plan was something much nicer but some surprise dental bills has thrown a wrench into that plan. The Savage (or something else in this price range) would get me started and still leave me enough in my budget for a good scope and brass, bullets, etc.

Any thoughts?

The 10TR was cheaper because there was a discount for military and LEO back in the days. If i remember well, I got mine for 650$ with the rail. It has an accustock and accutrigger wich I lowered to 1,2 lbs. I always do a dime hole with 5 shots at 100 yards.

I had one in 6.5 creed. Accuracy was meh, action didn't feel great, stock was garbage. If it fits your budget then go for it. If there are other offerings from tikka or howa or something similar that fit your budget, I would skip right over the savage

I have 2 savage 10 TR’s both with20” barrels and both in 308.

The accustocks are not great. Lots of flex in the fore end, not much of a cheek comb and they feel cheap. That being said the stocks are light and work ok, but barely. The but pads are very squishy if you like that sort of thing. Not needed for a 308 IMHO.

I replaced one stock with a custom McMillan style A5 and that rifle shoots 1/2 to 1 moa consistently out to 600 m all day long with my handloads using 155 Amax, 168 Hornady BTHP match and 178 ELD’s. At 200m it will consistently shoot 1/2 MOA if I do my part. With the accustock it shot 1 to 1.5 MOA at 100m never shot it past that with the factory stock.

Savage Mags are pricey especially 10 rounders and the quality is ok but some require tweaking to seat properly in the custom stock from MCRS

The other rifle wears an MDT LSS 1st Gen chassis was purchased used with a advertized 200 round count and for the life of me is only a 1 to 1.5 MOA shooter at best at 100m. It also does not like heavier projectiles so I shoot 155gr with it. It also has a lot of bolt slop when cycling.

Accutrigger are serviceable for my needs but are no where near as good as aftermarket.

My remington 700 sps accd in 223 also in am MDT chassis feels much better made, cycles like a Swiss watch, has a similar feeling trigger and at 100m puts rounds through the same hole with handloads all day long.

I am currently looking for a R700 sps aacd in 308 and will sell the 10TR in the mdt chassis when I find one.

Overall I think the savages are solid rifles and quite accurate but if I were to do it over I would have purchased
The R700 in 308.

Thanks for the replies guys. The savage is currently on sale for $699 so that kinda makes it more appealing. That’s about half of what a CTR seems to be going for now.

Any of you guys know for sure if it comes with a 20 moa rail or a 0 moa rail? Cabela’s doesn’t say either way and haven’t found a positive answer on the net.

0 MOA both on the one I purchased new and on the used one. Cheap Ali rails

Eh. I had one. It shot well, but felt rough when doing everything but pulling the trigger. I ended up with it in an MDT chassis and a Viper 6-24 on it.

I'd recommend handling one, and then handling something like an R700. There are always 700s in the EE.

I had a 10TR years ago and it produced sub-moa from 100 to 400m without much effort in the stock configuration. Drop it in a chassis, it can only get better but very usable out of the box. Just make sure to remove the rail, clean the oil under it and tight it back properly and you’ll be good.

I shot reloaded 168smk and 175smk

I have had the 308 as well as the 6.5 flavour and for the price point they are quite good but if your plan is to re stock it then a rem700 on the ee like a 5R used will start to be around the same price and a much better build platform so might want to have a look on ee first

I always seem to wind up with at least one 10TR in the safe, at any given time. They are an inexpensive rifle, and as a result I wind up selling them to friends or family looking for an accurate rifle that will let them start into the long range game. I always seem to wind up buying another one, just because they SHOOT. I have owned at least 6 over the years, both 20" and 24" barrels, and all would shoot under MOA in their factory stock. As has been mentioned, the factory Accustock isn't the greatest, but it will do the job until such time as you decide if you want to upgrade. I've put them in various chassis over the years, mostly MDT (the LSS-XL, the TAC-21, the ESS, and the HS-3) and even an Ashbury that I found on the EE. The chassis do make them shoot a little better, but once you get under MOA with a $600 rifle how much better can you really expect to get. And I'm not going to claim that I'm always an MOA shooter.

Are there better rifles out there - you bet, but not at the price point of the Savage. And you'll have to spend quite a bit more to get the value that you'll find in the 10TR. To my way of thinking they are a great starter rifle for long range, and they can be upgraded to serve you for a long time, as you advance.

I really like these rifles, mine shoots 1 moa at 100 yards. Seems to like 175 and 168 loads. I’m about to experiment with 147 cam pro bullets in it. I see a lot of the older ones have a top bolt release instead of the trigger guard one. I wonder if this makes much of a difference for putting it in a chassis. Does anyone have one with a trigger guard bolt release in a chassis or aftermarket stock?

I put mine in a Savage Stealth chassis (made by mdt) and had to modify it from trigger guard bolt release to top bolt release to make it fit.

I have one in 6mm Creed, only thing I did was fill the butt with caulk and wheel weights to balance it out better, shoots very well, accustock isn't the greatest as mentioned but it works.
Have an older 10HS in 308 and it's very accurate, most accurate 308 I've ever owned.
Savage makes pretty accurate rifles, they put out a few lemons now and then, but mostly they turn out to be gems.

My only complaint with the savage i had was the excessive effort needed to open the bolt after pulling the trigger. Never had that problem with a Remington or Tikka. That said, it shot like laser.
