Okay simple question with my only request being that there is no bias due to owning one of these guns. The price point on the savage is very attractive but it makes me wonder what is the real reason why the remington is almost twice the price and if the remingtons pros are actually worthy enough to be that much higher price wise. From my research both are great shooters out the box. Is the price really due to the barrel of the remington being stainless and the different stock? Is the savage stock really that noticeably worse? They are both 5r rifling so whats the real deal? Id like to save my money if its not that much better

I haven't shot a 5R but I do own a Savage 10 TR. The is no question that the Remington has a better stock. The Savage stock, even tho it is the accustock, is only just tolerable. The forend is still a bit flexible, the comb seems low to me (I had to add a Tac Pro cheek rest). The Savage mag works fine. I do believe the 5R barrel is a better barrel than the 10 TR altho the Savage is shooting fine for me. The actions/triggers both have their pros and cons. The Savage is definately worth what I paid for it but I would like to try out a 5R some day.

I dislike the mag on the 10TR. It's possible to catch at the rear early and mine doesn't like having a full mag inserted with the bolt forward. That said, the accuracy is there and I get almost no POI shift between clean bore, cold bore, or hot bore.

I've shot both, I own the 10TR, shot a buddies 5R and didn't notice any accuracy difference, the Savage fits me fine, if you're having that much trouble deciding, buy the Savage and bed the stock then it'll still be cheaper than the 5R and get rid of most of the stock complaints

I contemplated between this question a lot. I already have a 5R in 223 but am in the market for a 308. After all I have read about both and having a 5R already, I am going for another 5R in 308.

This comparison would be better against the sps tactical. If that was the question I think I would choose the savage.

Here again is what the OP is asking, not what other models would be better to compare. Stay on course folks.

There's the kicker right there (in bold)!

If that's your main aim them go with the Savage.

You will have a lot of pro's and con's from folks here who own the 5R or the 10TR.

Mine seems to be the same, full factory mag sometimes doesn't catch on the first push.

That being said, I have a 10TR, due to the price point. I am very happy with it, although a new stock will be coming. You may want to price out a new stock that you like and compare prices then and see what you would be saving if money is the issue.
My 10tr is accurate and fun. Not sure the weight difference between the 2 rifles, that may be something to look at. I feel the TR is quite heavy but haven't handled the Remington in a while so I cant speak to that.
I own Savage rifles and Remingtons. To be honest I find each model has pros and cons so you may want to get to a shop and handle each one to compare?

Good luck and enjoy

both the rem5r and 10 tr have 5r barrels, so that has to be consistant for comparison.

Also, both of the sps tac's that i've seen had baaaad accuracy with the oem pressure point stock, like 2.5" groups. Required a new stock like a b&c with full bedding block to get good groups. So that removes sps as an equal, no extras needed, comparison imo.

I've owned an sps tac AAC-SD, my shooting buddy has the 700 5r and I currently own a 10tr.

700 AAC-SD
IMO you can only really compare the AAC and 10tr on price, and depending where you buy the 10tr is cheaper. The hogue stock requires work to get good consistency in group size, and I found the comb to be too low for a large objective scope (50mm). Once the work to the stock is done and add a cheek piece it was a fun gun.

700 5r
I've put a couple hundred rounds down range with my buddies rifle. His has some qc issues but lets focus on it as a model. Stainless finish, a bonus for sure but adds cost. Hs precision stock, well built and I love the finish, IMO the best quality stock of the three. That being said it's the only stock I wouldn't own; it's recoil pad is thin and hard (easily fixed but extra cost on top of the most expensive rifle), and the palm swell is too large for my hands.

10tr
I found that the stock fits me the best and has a really nice recoil pad. Not the biggest fan of the bolt knob, I prefer the smooth round oversized knob on my hog hunter. The detachable mag is a bonus as it is the only rifle with one but like its already been said it doesn't like to lock in with a full mag and closed bolt.

Biggest thing is to handle both and see which one fits you the best, has the options you want and is the price you're willing to pay.
The 700 5r is a nice rifle and has some really good points but IMO the 10tr is the better value. You can upgrade the stock and a few other things and still be under the cost of the 700. It's all about budget and personal preference.

I have Rem 700 5R, working on load for long range shooting. It is a decent shooter but I had to change a stock. I am a 6'2" and stock was to short and palm swell way to tick. Got Bell&Carllson and rifle got new life.

Yes,
I have sell it to my buddy in Europe who shoots F-Class for $250 and got Bell&Carllson. I like that stock, will try to compete long range with this set up in 2015

So for a quality build go for the 5R, for cheaply made gun but to save money go with the TR but aside from materials used, both guns shoot great is what I am gathering
