Yeah, the standard pencil thin barrels heat up quicker too. If your chasing the small groups or want to prolong barrel life then you can end up waiting a while for the barrel to cool in order to keep POI constant.

I would take some time to shoot and get to know the rifle before you put it in the new chassis. It will give a base line for you build changes and you can then gauge if your going forwards.
I have made the mistake of buying a new rifle, shooting a few groups and then making too many changes at once. I don't enjoy second guessing my decisions. I wasted a lot of powder and barrel life on that one. LOL.

The MDT is a great looking chassis btw.

Don't buy factory ammo. Spend the money on a reloading set up. A basic Lee anniversary will load enough ammo accurately to get a lot out of your rifle.

Normall I would agree. Not every one plans on shooting enough to justify the costs of a press. My suggestion is to shoot a bunch of factory loads (Federal Blue Box is a decent, affordable cartridge), and see how much you're going to shoot. Justify your costs from there.
 
You do realize this is the "Target and Precision Rifles" forum. FGMM is the minimum. Blue box is hunting forum.

I was shooting my reloads (first trip out with the rifle with no development yet) and they were shooting about as well as Hornady Match 168s.
I'm at a cost of $2.19 - $1.34 of which was for the brass which is reusable.

It won't take many loads before a press is paid for, and really if you're not willing to invest $350 in a reloading setup you're going to have burned more than that by the time you've shot many rounds.

Yes I love the look of the MDT chassis. It gives it a Barrett M82 style look. Everyday i have different feeligns though. Its annoying me. ITs either the savage and Tac21 or the Ruger Precision. As soon as i filled out my info i started thinking maybe the Ruger is a better choice for me. And its very customizable as well. Already installed/setup and cheaper. The only thing I wish the barrel was 22-24 inch and not 20 inch for the 308. I really like that you can customize the Ruger like an AR15 the same way as the TAc21. Then i started thinking. I am not sure what advantages the Tac21 gives me over The Ruger Precision. The only advantage is i like thicker longer barrel on the savage. Also, peopel are saying that there are many complaints about the RPR here but IT seems like its only on this website. I cant read any other mass complaints anywhere on the web. Maybe it is a Canadian quality issue. Ahhh i just dont know. Ruger and upgrade what I want when i want?
 
Its your first rifle so I get its not an easy decision. I don't always follow this advice but "You buys in haste, You repents at leasure".

I hear what your saying with regard to the Ruger. It seems like a pretty decent rifle. I have thought about trying this one myself. But I am not sure I personally could live with some of the niggles people have pointed out.

You could always do what some others have suggested already. Buy the 10TR and shoot it as it is for while. Its really difficult for you to know what you want from a rifle until you have shot for a while. Even then your requirements may change over time.

The Savage is a pretty good base in terms of picking up after market triggers, barrels and stocks. And for $699 its really a decent deal. But there are lots of ways to spend your money.
 
Buy the rifle. Carefully test it. If it looks as if the barrel is a good one, and the rifle will shoot, then put the money into the MDT. If the barrel is only so-so, dumping the money into a rather expensive chassis set makes no sense. Of course, if appearance is more important that shooting qualities, get both at once.
 
Buy the rifle, buy some higher end ammo and see what it will do. If the barrel is crap replace the barrel before dropping in chassis. Also, use built up brass stash to reload as better ammo will shoot better than Federal Blue Box(although I do agree with trying a bunch of different rounds to build up brass and see what shoots the best, but federal brass is soft and generally the less desirable than most for reloading) . But Do invest in a reloading setup, it will help you wring the most out of your rifle ND will make you very happy. Plus the time spent trying new loads, and loading is enjoyable.

Agreed.

Don't bother throwing a 10TR in a Chassis... it's still just a 10TR in there and won't improve accuracy much.

Spend the $ on reloading gear, and ammo.

Then upgrade to a better overall platform when needed.

I've got a 20" 10TR as my bush gun with a Bushnell LRS 10x40, it's pretty accurate for an out-of-the box shooter that you can throw over your shoulder on a dirtbike. I love it!
