I saw a savage 11/111 lightweight hunter in .243, .270 and 30.06 in the wholesale sports flyer marked down $300 to $540. I'm looking for my first deer rifle, and I'm really interested in the .308 but they don't offer that one. I know that the 30.06 is the second best all-around caliber that you can get, with the ammo available at small stores both in the middle of no where or big stores in town.
But I'm really concerned with the recoil of the 30.06 in such a lightweight rifle. Of course, mounting the scope would probably bring the weight up from 6lbs closer to 7lbs. Does anyone have any experience with this particular rifle, or suggestions? Here is the link:

My second choice is the Ruger American in the .308 at Cabela's, where it's on sale for $500 right now. But that doesn't seem like as good of a deal to me, considering the fact that Ruger American is a budget rifle and a step down from the savage 11/111.

Thanks to all for your help in advance!

The model 111's (which would be the 30.06 or 270) is a decent step up from an American and the price sounds "decent" but not great (they were selling for that "regular price" when the dollar was at par - but in today's bucks, when the new Axis is listing at $700, that's a good price.

While "light" it's not uber light and as you note, will probably tip a little over 7 lbs with scope and a full magazine.

If recoil is a worry or consideration the 270 would kick about the same as the 308 and shoot a whole lot flatter.

Yes, you have less variety in terms of factory rolled ammo with the 270, but if this is going to be a deer rifle it is more than adequate - in fact, the 243 (which I use for deer) is viable at typical deer range and still deadly on Bambi well out past 300 yards if you can make the shot - and it is stretching it to call it's recoil a "kick".

If you plan on hunting something "larger" than bambi I would opt for the 30.06 or hold out to find your 308....

I own the lightweight hunter in .270. Awesome gun for the money. Best out there IMO.

Took a nice Bull moose with it this fall.

That's damn cheap. I may buy another.

I would pick the .270. It is better than the .308 and .243. The 30-06 is not necessary for deer. Savage says this model weighs 6 lbs. I calculated the recoil for the following using 7 lbs total weight:

.243 Win, 100 grain, - 12.3 ft-lbs
.270 Win, 140 grain, - 20.9
.308 Win, 175 grain, - 21.2
30-06, 175 grain, - 26.1

So, if all you ever want is to shoot is deer at shorter ranges, then the .243 will work. If you want more of an all around longer range, then I would go with the .270 Win. That certainly is a nice looking gun at that price.

If elk, bull moose or big bears are not on the agenda, get the .243 win and don't look back. With modern bullets, the .243 is a whitetail/mule deer/caribou slayer farther out than most people can accurately shoot in the field. Otherwise, get the 30/06 and install a better recoil pad. Limbsaver or Kick-EEZ

I've got one in a 243 I'm restocking and turning into an ultralight switch barrel. I think the listed weights may be optimistic- mine came in at 5 lbs, 15 Oz. Restocked with a new bolt knob I'm at 5 lbs 2 0z. Only ran maybe 10 rounds through it in original configuration, recoil was nothing- as you'd expect in a .243.
