I have a custom rifle in my head. I want to use the Savage 11 action from a Lightweight (want a light rifle) but wonder if there is a comparable action from the Rem 700 lineup that would be better due to the mod popularity of the 700.

I plan on rebarreling to a short 16 - 18.5” thick contour and not sure about availability or ease of barrel swapping for either action.

and on another vein, any recommendations on whom to talk to for a custom stock?

The rem 700 is the Chevy 350 of the rifle world but the savage is not far behind or after market parts , I use Rem 700 actions as I'm set up for them and I like the trigger better. The Remington model 7 is the lightest action other than the Ti Remington made but if your going for a stout barrel then a couple of ounces on the action shouldn't matter. Wildcat stocks are a great option if your a bit handy as they are lightweight , stiff and Canadian made. Good luck on your build.

Two weeks ago I got a custom wood rifle stock from MCRS Tactical in Calgary for my savage 10TR.

So far I am very happy with it. It is an A5 style stock with several changes.

The price was excellent and Kris was great to deal with.

From measuring me for the stock to completion was under two weeks and that included pillar bedding and bedding the action as well as milling a custom rail up front for a bipod.

Remington, hands down. I like savage actions, own a few of each actually. But aftermarket parts (triggers, stocks, etc) I seem to find are a little more common then savage. Most smiths will tell you that you cant beat a model 700 action anyway unless you get into the Stillers, Bighorn etc.

There are some advantages to the Savage 10, lock time is a millisecond or 2 faster, and if you plan on switching barrels often they are good for that.
Everything else goes to the 700 action though.

seems it's a Remington 700 then.

how hard is it to get a fluted bolt to lower weight, being the Savage 11 Lightweight comes with one out of box. ;)

also, anyone have recommendations for the lightest weight heavy contour barrel?

I you want a lightweight heavy contour barrel your looking a a carbon fiber wrapped one ala Christensen arms which is quite pricey but lightweight.

I went thru the same thought process.

Bought a .223 Savage Hog Hunter over the 700, as I want a heavier threaded barrel, beefy bolt knob, with back up irons. At the time it was 469.00. Did not like how the new 700s look compared to the older ones, and the safety recall concerned me.

Fast forward 4 years and I have been tickering, just love the Accutrigger and action.

Found bottom metal and a mag for 70.00 and a Accustock for 50.00.

I can go back to the lighter tupperware stock for field use, but found that I am more stationary for varmints and don't mind the heavier aluminum bedded stock that I textured.

Have removed the iron sights used a larger scope, and as well kept the sights on with a compact QD mount scope.

Either way I just love my bargain bolt action. :) be warned the thicker barrel makes the package beefy and heavy.

I vote the 700. I've been in a similar situation. The aftermarket for savage lacks. It was the deciding factor for me. They change things up.. it causes another level of trying to find parts (bottom bolt release vs top bolt release etc)
A decent gunsmith should be able to flute a bolt for you. Send it away and get that medium barrel fluted as well. Cerakote the whole thing and never look back. My opinion after wasting too much money.
