Savage 110BA in .338

Need some help here

I have a savage 110BA a friend bought for hunting and decided it was too heavy and I bought from him at his loss.

It came with a 5-20-50 trijicon accupoint scope the elevation seems to be stuck. For what I paid I'm looking to build a decent shooter from 100-800 maybe 1000 yards After some reading I believe what I'm looking to add is a different base/plate rail and a night force nxs 5.5-22-56 with moar reticle. I've been shooting the hornaday 285gr bthp match ammo. Also have Harris bipod I'd like to upgrade that as well

umm where is the question here??

the stock tri-rail base deal is 20MOA (20 moa is the "standard" in canted basses) more is better if you really want to push out..

the NF line up of scopes are very good , solid, reliable, repeatable, and accurate, keep in mind that they are second focal plane, so if you plan to use it to range or shoot with hold overs, that the hash marks are only true values at a certain magnification..
 
Nightforce is a solid choice, your current base will be ok. I would go with the Nightforce you mentioned as well as a solid set of rings (Farrel's, Nightforce, USO) and a bubble level (USO or Vortex).
 
sorry i was not clear, just looking for advice and thoughts. i dont really like the tri rail currently on it so i think i will get the ferrell base and rings.
what moa cant is right for me ? 20?

Depends on the scope and how far you want to shoot. Some scopes like NF have huge ranges of internal adjustment, up to 100moa IIRC. Others only have like 60-70. If you plan on really stretching your legs i.e 1500yds+, 40moa base might be for you.
 
Depends on how far you want to shoot.
The NXS you are thinking of getting has 100MOA of vertical adjustment. More than enough to get you to 1000 yards without any angled base.

If you wanted to stretch out further than that (this is a 338 lapua, thats its designed purpose), I would go with at least a 20 MOA canted base, but would prefer a 30 or even 40 MOA canted rail. This will cause your scope to be near its lowest vertical setting to be point of aim at 1 or 200 yards. This leaves you with the vast majority of the scopes "up" vertical movement available for very long range adjustments!

Thats where it becomes really fun!

I have one of these 110 BA rifles in 300WinMag. With it scoped as I described above, I can shoot targets out to about 1900 yards (using the scopes adjustments only.)

i cant find anyone stocking the scope in canada, any suggestions ? also looking at schmidt & bender optics because i cannot locate any locally but wolverine has a comparable s&b

Exact same rifle and was running the exact same optic. I ended up ditching the Trijicon it came with(package deal) because of its limited internal adjustment. Fantastic optic just didn't suit my needs. ATRS has a very nice 30MOA rail for the Savage BA, give them a shout.
 
Hirsch Precision is advertising an overstock on Nightforce NXS scopes and the lowest allowable prices. Give Peter a call and see what he can do. Check out Murphy Precision for a custom 30 moa rail. They ship to Canada and will do one for $125 dollars. Solid rail without the arch like the Farrell. Going with a 40moa base will leave your NXS adjusted almost all the way "up" when zero'd at 200 putting stress on the internals. Unless you want to leave a 500yard zero on it, this will in the long term start to wear on the scope. There are articles that touch on this. I don't know if it can be proven but it makes sense. I don't know if I would want to leave my scope essentially bottomed out all the time. A 30moa scope will get you essentially 80moa of adjustment from zero though. This should get you to nearly 2000m
 
I purchased a 30MOA base from ATRS. I've also switched out the grip for a Magpul MOE grip, put a Coretac Solutions brake on it and a rail for an Atlas bipod. All great upgrades. Also, I have the exact scope you mentioned in your original post, awesome optic!

ATRS sold you a 20MOA rail for your BA? I think maybe you got that wrong. They specifically told me their rails are 30MOA for the .338 BA and that's what I switched too. I didn't realise they had stock in the MOAR reticle NF or I would have bought from them. Thankfully a good WTB ad has one on its way to me now.
